OBJECTIVE

All videos, images can be seen in 3D which makes more realistic than on a
projection screen.
No screen is required, as the system itself creates an invisible screen in the
air and projects on that i.e., it is a planar display which uses only ambient air.

INTRODUCTION

Heliodisplay is a technology used for displaying images and videos in mid

air.
In short, it is a display that does not require any screen.
 This system was developed by Chad Dyner.
It works as a free space touch screen when connected to PC.
It is a two-dimensional display that appears to float.

4/20/19 B. Indu ECE-A 5

PRINCIPLE

It is similar in principle to the cinematic technique of rear projection and can
appear three-dimensional when using appropriate version.
Frustrated Total Internal Reflection(FTIR).

WORKING

 Heliodsiplay can receive input from a computer, television, or even from video
game consoles, and project the image on a floating screen of air.
 The image can even give the appearance of a floating, holographic, 3D image.
Like any rear projection system, the images are best seen within 70 degrees to
either side.

Cont..,

The Heliodisplay transforms water into a unique screen of fine vapour, suspended
in mid-air to create a nearly invisible screen into which any image can be
projected.
The vapour screen is a particle cloud created by passing the surrounding air
through a heat pump which in turn cools the air to a level below its dew point.
The artificial screens are formed by storing the condensed particle cloud.

SPECIFICATIONS

1024 768 resolution, 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios.

2000:1 contrast ratio.
It supports all formats.
3D compatible.
No specialized hardware or software.
Projects any images that would be viewable on a computer screen or television.

4/20/19 B. Indu ECE-A 11

ADVANTAGES
No screen to project images.
Device is light weight and can be converted into a furniture.
Heliodisplay does not create fog, so no electronic devices in the room are
affected.
No special glasses are required to see the display.
The technology is low power consuming.

4/20/19 B. Indu ECE-A 12

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

Heliodisplay is very expensive.

Viewing a Heliodisplay image in direct sunlight is almost impossible.
Screen is essentially air, so it can become distorted with too much air
movement in the room.

APPLICATIONS

Advertising/Promotion
Gaming/Artwork
Video conferencing
Military training programs
Engineering/Architecture plans
pre-operative planning.

Other display system with same principle

Fog screen: a display surface made out of a cloud of water vapor

diffused into the air as a very dry fog.
Large Translucent displays
Perspecta

CONCLUSION

Heliodisplay has great potential and would be ideal for collaborative work.
It replaces the traditional glass TV screen and computer. A future display would
be an open-air display with high resolution, clear 3D capability, along with an
accurate interactive capability.
It’s various applications like advertising, training etc suggests that its future scope
is very bright.
