Synopsis of the Paper
• In this paper, we focus on the combination of case
histories with science-based methods of analysis as a
powerful way of advancing methods of design.
• First we will understand the Limit Analysis.
• Then, we will explore the following cases:
Bearing capacity failure (the collapse of grain elevators in
Transcona and Fargo),
An alternative collapse limit state (leaning stability) that
threatened the Tower of Pisa.
• To all these cases, we apply modern methods of
analysis.
Limit Analysis
• Limit analysis takes advantage of the lower and upper
bound theorems of plasticity theory to bound the
rigorous solution to a stability problem from below and
above.
• The lower bound theorem states that collapse does not
occur for a statically admissible stress field - a stress
field that is stable and statically admissible.
• The upper bound theorem states that collapse is either
imminent or already underway for a kinematically
admissible velocity field – a velocity field which is both
unstable and kinematically admissible.
