Advancement in
Cohesive Mixers
Mechanical Operation
COHESIVE MIXERS
What are cohesive mixtures?

•Mixing of cohesive solids is one of the most difficult of all mixing problem. Cohesive substances
resembles liquids, but they have a very high viscosity.
•Hence the mixing equipment must be much more powerful than that of non-cohesive mixtures.
•Here the mixture shear, fold, stretch, and compress the material to be mixed.
•The force generated in these mixers are large, and the power consumption is high.

TYPE OF MIXTURES
The main types of mixtures are:

o Change-can Mixture
o Kneaders
o Disperser
o Masticators
o Continuous Kneaders
o Muller Mixers
o Mixing Rolls

CHANGE CAN MIXING
Advancement

o Change-can mixing and handling technology has

changed dramatically during the past few years.
o The mixing systems are available with up to three
different mixers ( formulations having viscosity = 10 6 )
o A follower plate discharge system has been specially
designed.
o Unlike the old mixers, the discharge system pushes the
mixture out of the can into product(cartridges, moulds or
hoppers)
o This gives the modern change can mixture a great
advantage over old mixture that it reduces the production
cost.

MODERN KNEADERS
Hydraulic Ram
Advanced kneaders

1. The main advanced feature of hydraulic ram over

traditionally used mixtures is that it uses pressure as
the main operation.
2. The constant pressure improves the dispersion of
various raw materials, increases the quality of mixing.
3. In recent developments, digitalization of hydraulic ram
mixture have occurred, which allows the operator to
set timing, length of ram, and speed of rotation
4. In comparison of old kneaders, this consumes less
power and has high capacity has is less noisy.

Normal sigma mixture

Advanced Sigma Mixture

1. Advancement of sigma mixture has helped many small manufacturing

units.
2. The main modification of the mixture includes the steam jacketed
walls. Hot steam enters the jacket to provide sufficient temperature
Steam sigma mixture
rise during mixing.
3. The energy supplied in form of steam helps in the blending of various
components. For example, in the manufacturing of gum, the mixing
components needs to attain a temperature of 110⁰C to 120⁰C.
4. For the discharge of mixed components, the old mixture were needed
to be tilt. This has been overcome by providing a discharge screw at
the bottom, (which may be further connected to an extruder as per
the requirement).

EXTRUDER
Cold Feed Extruder

o Old extruders were extreme labour intensive, and

required high power consumption.
o New extruders are fully automatic and digitally
controlled.
o Unlike old extruders, they are now equipped with
thermostatically controlled temperature regulation
system.
o Screw and barrel sizes have been optimized so
they can meet the requirement of majority users
for different process requirement.

Overall Development
Comparison between old and new mixtures.

o The major difference between the mixtures is the increase in mixing index.
o This is because due to the application of pressure and temperature.
o The advancement of mixtures has helped manufacturers to reduce the mixing time, as well
as modern mixers are more power efficient.
o Digitalization and computerized mixers has been extremely useful.
o The discharge process has improved over the year. Traditionally, the barrel was tilted for
collecting the mixed substance. This was time consuming and labour intensive.
o But the new discharge process includes a discharge screw at the bottom of the barrel, which
can be directly connected to an extruder.
