The Research Project and your Study Plan

The Research Project consists of four 6 credit units.

At Honours level, these are called Science Research Dissertations Parts 1-4

At Masters level, the first unit is usually called the Literature Review & Research Proposal.
There are different codes used but a common one is SCIE5590. This is followed by three
other units (Research Project Parts 1-3). Again, there are different codes but the units are
the same

The Research Project must be taken in the sequence

HONOURS MASTERS
Research Dissertation Part 1 Literature Review & Research Proposal
Research Dissertation Part 2 Research Project Part 1
Research Dissertation Part 3 Research Project Part 2
Research Dissertation Part 4 Research Project Part 3

The Research Project is assessed over two semesters.

You cannot put all the four units into one semester in your study plan.

Masters students must have completed at least 24 credit points of Level 4 or Level 5 taught
units with a weighted average of at least 65% to enrol on the Research Project

The Research Proposal & Literature Review and Research Project Part 1 take place in the first

- New Masters students

Masters students must have completed at least 24 credit points of Level 4 or Level 5 taught
units with a weighted average of at least 65% to enrol on the Research Project

This means that you cannot enrol in the Research Project in Semester 1 of your first year.
You must complete 24 credit points of taught coursework at Level 4 or Level 5 and gain an
average mark of 65% in these units in order to qualify for the Project.
The Research Project and your Study Plan
- New Masters students:
- 2 year program of 96 credits
Masters students on a 2 year program requiring completion of 96 credits should take
coursework units in Year 1 as far as possible. You can enrol on the Research Project in Year 2
if you wish. You do not have to complete the Research Project: you can choose to study taught
coursework units instead.

If you do choose the Research Project, please remember: you must enrol on the Research
Proposal & Literature Review and Research Project Part 1 in one semester and then Research
Projects Parts 2 and 3 in the next semester.
You cannot enrol in all four Research Project units in one semester.

- New Masters students:
- 1.5-2 year program of 72-96 credits
Masters students with accreditation for prior learning are on a program which allows
completion of the Masters within 1.5-2 years, studying between 72-96 credits.

The requirements for the Research Project are still the same. You must complete at least 24
credit points of taught Level 4 or Level 5 units with an average mark of at least 65% before
you can enrol on the Research Project.

This means you cannot enrol on the Research Project in your first semester. You
can choose to enrol on the Research Project in either Semester 2 of Year 1 or Semester 1 of
Year 2, depending on how you choose to balance your coursework.

But you MUST take the Research Proposal & Literature Review and Research Project Part 1 in
one semester and Research Projects Parts 2 and 3 in the next semester.
