INTRODUCTION

Fail-safe braking and break motor are types of brakes

that, operated naturally, are always engaged. They
commonly consist of spring applied brakes which are
actuated by a stack of Belleville disc springs. When
pressurized, by either pneumatic or hydraulic, the spring
stack is retracted and the brake is opened or disengaged.
FAIL SAFE BREAK

WORKING OF FAIL SAFE BRAKING
FROM BRAKE CONDITION TO RUN
CONDITION

•When DC supply is present in fail safe breaking

circuit moving shaft get attract backward from
breakdown drum.
•Because of magnetic field produced by solenoid
coils.
•And spring connected get contracted.
•So breaks get released and motor start rotating.

RUNNING TO BRAKING CONDITION
When dc supply is absent in fail safe braking
circuit solenoid coil is not get energised
Hence at this time spring gets expanded.
So eyes contact changes their position.
Because of spring, the brake gets
immediately applied. Therefore motor
stops.
BREAK MOTOR

TO BREAK CONDITION

1. When the supply is cut off then shaft changes its position,
because spring is released.
2. Hence of the shaft move in the opposite side of the spring.
3. Due to this braking arrangement the rotor is blocked. Hence
supply is cut off and the rotor does not move.

BREAK TO RUNNING CONDITION

1. When the supply is given to the motor rotor will

achieved to the original position to the parallel with
stator because of minimum reluctance.
2. When the rotor achieve the original position at this
time spring gets compressed hence the shaft position
gets change.
 ADVANTAGES

1. Electric actuation , no fluid.

2. The problem of brake fluid vaporization
and freezing is eliminated.
3. When supply cut off the brakes are
immediately applied hence the severe
accidents are avoided.
 DISADVANTAGES

1. Dependence on battery power to energize

the brake system drains down the battery
much faster.
2. Due to residual magnetism present in
electromagnets, the brake shoe takes time to
come back to its original position.
3. The installation of an electromagnetic brake is
very difficult if there is not enough space
between the gearbox and the rear axle.
 APPLICATION

1. Elevators
2. Lift
3. Rolling mill
4. Textile Industries
5. Hoist
6. Rolling Mill
7. Winches
8. Mixing Mills
9. Cement Industries
10. Sugar Industries
