DESERT

BIOMES
By: Arralizze De Guzman
(BEEDIII-B)
WHAT IS BIOMES?
Isa geographic area characterized by
specific kinds of plants and animals,
Deserts, Tropical rainforest, and
Tundra are all types of biomes.
WHAT IS DESERT?
 isformed by mountains blocking the path of
precipitation
 Can be hot or cold but they are always dry

 They receive less than 25cm of precipitation

annually
 They cover 1/5 of the earths surface
TYPES OF
DESERT
HOT AND DRY DESERT
Climate are warm all year around
and are extremely hot in the
summer. Usually they have very
little rainfall, making the climate
extremely dry and hard for plants
and animals to survive.
ARABIAN DESERT
SEMIARID DESERT
 Semiarid desert are only located in the
Northern hemisphere due to their unique
setup and the temperatures that they
maintain throughout the year.
 summer temperatures average about 23
degrees celsius , but it never gets warmer
than 38 degrees. In the evening, the
temperature are cool, at around 10 degree
celsius .
GREAT BASIN USA
COLD DESERT
Can actually very hot and dry
during in the summer, but in
winter they are brutally cold
and dry with temperature below
freezing point.
GOBI DESERT
The Sheo Leopard
is one of the
animal that we
can found in Gobi
desert . This
animal has the
special ability to
be adapted to live
in such a cold
climate.

ANIMALS THAT CAN LIVE IN

COLD DESERT
COASTAL
DESERT
get more rain than their
semiarid and hot and dry
desert; they can get up to 12
more centimeters every
single year.
ATAMACAMA OF CHILE
OASIS
 Oasis are parts of the desert where plants
grow and water is almost always available.
 It is formed by a pool of water trapped
between layers of rock and desert floor.
 The can allow people to settle and cover
grow crops in the desert.
10 LARGEST DESERT IN THE WORLD
Rank Desert Area(km2) Area (mi2)

1 Antartic Desert (Antartica) 13,829,430 5,339,573

2 Artic Desert 13,726,937 1,003,600+

3 Sahara Desert ( North africa) 9,100,000+ 3,32,000+

4 Arabian Desert(Middle East) 2,330,000 900,000

5 Gobi Desert 1,300,000 500,000

6 Kalahari Desert( Africa) 900,000 360,000

7 Patagonian Desert(South 670,000 260,000

America)

8 Great Victoria Desert 647,000 250,000

(Australia)

9 Syrian Desert(Middle East) 520,000 200,000

10 Great basin dessert (North 492 190,000

America)
CLIMATE
 The desert is the hottest biome on
Earth. It also has its extremes.
 It can be over 50 degrees during the day
and below 32 degrees at night.
 Less than 25cm on rainfall every year

 The amount of rainfall varies, but when

it rains it pours!
SEASONS
 I. The season are generally warm
throughout the year and very hot in the
summer.
 II. The winters usually bring little rainfall.

 III. Temperatures exhibit daily extremes

because the atmosphere contains little
humidity to block the sun’s rays.
ANIMALS

 The animals includes snakes,

owls, mice, thorny devil lizards,
fennec foxes, gila monsters,
camels and vultures.
PLANT LIFE IN DESERT

There are several plants that are

able to survive in the desert
Most plants survive by their long
roots, to reach underground
water sources.
EXAMPLE:

Prickly pear
EXAMPLE

Variety of cactuses
EXAMPLE

Ocotillo plant
ADAPTATIONS

-Many of the animals in the

desert have become nocturnal.
-Both animals and plants have
learned to store water.
-Tolerate hyperthermia.
FLORA
Some desert flora include shrubs
Ex. Prickly pearls, desert holly and
Brittle bush
Most of the desert plants are
drought or salt tolerance
Ex. Xerophites
FAUNA
 This are animals that remain hidden during
daylight hours.
 As to control body temperature or to limit
moisture needed.
 These animls adapted to live in desert are
called Xerocoles
 ex. Jack, rabbit, kangaroo rat, cayote etc
DESERT FOOD WEB

Animals that eat insects and

plants eaten by carnivores,
and domesticated animals
like camels, get fed oats by
humans.
ENVIRONMENTAL THREATS TO DESERT
ECOSYSTEM

 Global Warming and Human development

are threatening desert survival.
 Drought
 Directly affect the growth of vegetation
 Global warming is raising Earth’s
temperature, increasing the chances of
severe drought.
IRRIGATION
 Desert experience very little rainfall
 Trees and plants will not be able to live
on the remaining water
 The salt levels in the soil make the soil
unable to support life
HUMAN ACTIVITY IN
DESERTS
 “Human activity causes deserts to expand.”
 “Rapid loss of fertile land causes deserts to
expand.”
 “Too much grazing causes plant life to be
destroyed.”
 “Mining, improper farming methods, and
tree destruction causes desert expansion.”
