COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Traffic Engineering deals with one critical element of the
transportation system: streets and highways, and their use by
vehicles. This course focuses on the key engineering skills required
to practice traffic engineering in a modern setting. Therefore, this
course encompasses signs, markings, signals, work-zone traffic
control, traffic control for school areas, traffic control systems for
railroad-highway grade crossing, traffic control for bicycle
facilities, etc.

METHODOLOGY:
The course will be delivered through a combination of lectures,
handouts for additional information, homework problems, and a
class project.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The goal of this course is to provide the student examine ways in
which traffic engineers promote operational efficiency and safety
through the use of traffic control device.

Characteristics of the Driver, the Pedestrian, the Vehicle, and the
Road
Traffic Engineering Studies
Highway Safety
Fundamental Principles of Traffic Flow
Intersection Design
Intersection Control
Capacity and Level of Service for Highway Segments
Capacity and Level of Service at Signalized Intersections
Examinations:
Four examinations will be administered; two
examinations plus a mid-term exam and a final exam.
Materials for each examination will come from class
lectures, handouts, home works and what will be
discussed in class.

Exam Dates:
First Exam: May 16, 2019
Midterm: Base on University Schedule
Third Exam: July 4, 2019
Final Exam: Base on University Schedule
Make-up Examination Policy:
No make-up examination will be given without satisfying
these requirements:
• Emergency Situation: Will be dealt with on a case-by-
case basis. A VALID documents will be required from
an approved authority justifying your absence;
• Illness: A VALID Medical report from recognized facility
signed by your attending doctor;
• It is the responsibility of each student to notify me,
your instructor, as soon as possible when such a
situation arises.
Homework Policy:
Homework assignments are due at the beginning of
class on their due date, and they must be neat,
presentable and legible.
Each late assignment will receive deduction and no one
will be allowed to submit homework assignments for
another student.
No copy write work will be accepted, if found both
students work will be disqualified. Questions will be
asked from homework assignment given and you are
expected to answer.
Grading:
Each student final grade will be based on the following
averages:
Homework / assignments;
Average of their two examinations
Mid-Term Exam Grade;
Final Exam Grade;

Your grade will be determined by summing the following


scores:
Average of two (2) Exams 30%
Mid-term Exam 25%
Final Exam 35%
Homework/Assignment 10%
Grading Scale:
100 - 90 A
89 - 80 B
79 - 70 C
69 - 60 D
Below 60 F
Policy on Incomplete Grades:
Incomplete grades (I) will only be submitted only if
substantial amount of work to determine your grade
has not been met. The decision to assign an incomplete
grade will be at the sole discretion of the instructor. If
substantial work is not met, F grade will be submitted
for you.
Policy on Cell Phone:
Cell phone use or charging is not permitted during class
time. Always keep your phones off during class time or exam
to avoid breaking the rule.
No Student will be permitted to have a cell phone exposed
or to even allow it to ring during examinations, if you are
caught in this act your phone will be taken and you will not
receive your phone AGAIN.
As an engineering student, PLEASE GET YOURSELF A
SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR because you will not be allowed to
exchange calculator during class time or on an EXAM.
Policy on Class Attendance and Participation:
Students who miss five (5) or more classes will automatically be
dropped from the class and said student gets an DR grade.
Students will not be allowed in class after 15 minutes of class
lecture. If your Instructor is late 30 min after class time without
communication to the class you have all right to leave the class
for that day. However, please be aware that some of the
materials discussed will not be from the text books or from
handouts but you will be responsible to know them for your
test/exam.
You are responsible for all materials discussed during lectures
whether you are in class or not. Included in this policy is the
instructor right to call upon any student during class time to
provide input to discussions or to answer questions relating to
the course.
Policy on Exam:
• Academic dishonesty will result in an F grade. This
include:
• Aiding others during exams
• Copying another student work during exam
• Exchanging of wrought work or calculator during
exam
• Always read instruction(s) on exam before starting
work
• No student will be allowed on exam after 20 minutes
of the start time
