 NGN Components
• Soft Switch (or Call Agent or Telephony Server or
Media Gateway Controller)
– Based upon Open Architecture--preferably be developed
on Commercially Available Hardware and Software
Platforms
– Should be able to provide all existing services available in
TDM network
– Performs Media Gateway Control Function
– Performs Call control, signalling and interworking, Traffic
measurement and recording functions
– Provides Addressing, Analysis, routing and charging
facilities
– Interacts with Application Server to supply services not
hosted on Softswitch

– Provides interworking function between SS7
network and IP network ( SS7 signalling can be
terminated in SGW and can be translated and
messages transported over IP Network)
– Performs Packetization of signalling and

About NGN services

 With advanced CPE such as PC’s, smart phone, set top boxes etc
Much of the “intelligence” can be passed out to the edges of the network.

Network based services/solution allow shared resources from different

locations ( no need to take CPE with them, download software at the new
location) and wasting his precious time.

 With network based services he only need to authenticate and gain access to
his services

 Next Generation Services

 Traditionally the major thrust was narrow based voice calls.

 Now the user is moving towards more advance broadband multimedia and information
intensive services connected with network via sophisticated CPE ( wide bandwidth and
QoS) and able to select wide range of innovative services.

 The enviroment is going to be multiple service providers,carriers,equipment vendors to

provide services to the end user.

 All is to enable usewr to get information content they want in any media/format,over
any facilities,anytime,anywhere and in any volume.

1) Voice telephony- Support all existing voice telephony services

( call waiting,call forwarding,3 way conference,centrex etc).
It is not duplicate but to support.

2) Data (connectivity services-Real time connectivity between endpoints

for various value added features (band width on demand)

3) Multimedia services-Multiple parties to interect using voice,video and/or data

(converse with displaying visual information)

4) Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)- To improve the interlocation networking

capabilities of businesses (lagre,geographically dispersed) to combine with
their existing private networks.

5) Public Network Computing (PNC)-Public network based computing services to

businesses and consumers and can charge hourly, daily, weekly etc
(processing and storage capabilities for hosting a web page)

6) Unified Messaging- Delivery of voice mail, e-mail ,fax, pages through common
interface, independent of type of access (wireline, wireless, PC etc)

7) Information Brokering- Involves advertising, finding and providing information to

match consumers with providers.

8) E-Commerce- Allows consumers to purchase goods and services electronically

over the network ( processing the transactions ,verifying payments information,
providing security and providing trading through home banking and home shopping
