What is ELECTRO-CYCLONE
SEPARATOR Model
 This Device is combination of Two
Existing Air Filtration Technologies, i.e.
Cyclone Separator plus electrostatic
precipitation.
Objective of the Project
 To Find the optimum parameter of an
Electro Cyclone Separator of ultra-fine
diesel soot particulate matter of Diesel
Engine exhaust gas by “ Taguchi Method”
Working Principle

 A centrifugal separator stationary

mechanical device that utilizes centrifugal
force to separate solid or liquid particles
from a carrier gas.
 By applying electrostatic attraction in
ultra-fine diesel soot particulate matter of
exhaust gas are removed.
Lets Make things More Clear
 The flow enters near the top through the tangential
inlet, which gives rise to an axially descending spiral
of gas and a centrifugal force field that causes the
incoming particles to concentrate along, and spiral
down, the inner walls of the cyclone separator.
Since these larger particles have difficulty following
the high-speed spiral motion of the gas and the
vortex, the particles hit the inside walls of the
container and drop down into a collection
hopper. The remaining gas reverses its axial
direction of flow and exits out through the vortex
finder (gas outlet tube) .
 And Comparatively tiny and lighter (>1
micron) particle of exhaust gas coming
towards the center so these carbon
particles pulled out of the gas by using
Static Electricity In the Cyclone Separator.
 (centrifugal force Fc electrostatic force Fe and drag force Fd)
we can make some assumptions:
 The particles are dispersed enough and
other effects are ignored;
 After arriving at the wall of the
electrocyclone separator, particles are
collected; no re-entrain occurs;
 The drag force obeys Stokes‟ law;
the drag force in the outward radial direction that is
opposing the outward velocity on any particle in the
inlet stream is:
 Using ρp as the particles density, the centrifugal
component in the outward radial direction is:

 Particles are spherical.

 The particle loading does not affect the gas flow
field. Generally, the particle loading is high
enough to affect the gas flow field near the wall
of the electro-cyclone separator,
Purpose of Design
 Increasing Air Pollution Day by Day.
 particles with diameters of less than 2.5
micron are most fetal for living beings due
to inhaling of the same.
 Diesel soot particulate matter is
considered to be the most harmful
pollutant.
 Diesel particulate matters are inhalable
and may easily penetrate deep into the
lungs because of their small sizes.
Design of Experiments
 TaguchiMethod(Steps Involved in Taguchi
Method)
Identify the main function and its side effects.
Identify the noise factors, testing condition and
quality characteristics.
Identify the objective function to be optimized.
Identify the control factors and their levels.
Select a suitable Orthogonal Array and construct
the Matrix Conduct the Matrix experiment.
Examine the data; predict the optimum control
factor levels and its performance.
Conduct the verification experiment.
Identification of Main Function and
its side effects

 Main function: Collection Efficiency of

Electro Cyclone Separator w.r.t Optimum
Values of Inlet Velocity of Exhaust gas and
Applied Voltage.
 Side effects : Excessive Heat Production,
Back Pressure on Engine, Carbon Particle
Concentration on Electrode.
 Table 4.1: Factors that affect facing
operation
Selection of Orthogonal Array
 To select an appropriate orthogonal array
for conducting the experiments, the
degrees of freedom are to be computed.
The same is given below: Total Degrees
of Freedom: 9
 The most suitable orthogonal array for
experimentation is L9 array
Experimental Details
 Since the objective function (Surface
Finish) is smaller-the-better type of
control function, was used in calculating
the S/N ratio. The S/N ratios of all the
experiments were calculated and
tabulated as shown in Table

Advantages
 Diesel soot particulate the most harmful
pollutant can be arrested by Electron-
Cyclone Separator.
 The cyclones samplers have the highest ratio
of performance to energy consumption.
 Particle collection efficiency could be
enhanced by an additional electrical forces
are applied to supplement of the inertial
forces.
 Energy consumption 0.5KW per hour.
Future Scope of ElectroCyclone
Separator
◦ Cyclone have low cost of construction and
ease of operation.
◦ the cyclones samplers have the highest ratio
of performance to energy consumption,
compared to other sampling technologies.
◦ very compact size in most applications.
◦ can be used under extreme processing
conditions.
◦ Collection efficiency increase by using an
electro Static field which is a low power
consumption unit.
◦ This Setup also reduce back pressure in
engine during air sampling process.
What we plan to do in the coming
month
 Developing Prototype Model.
 Experiment on Diesel Engine.
 Power supply taken from “ON Vehicle
Generator”
 Periodic Automatic Maintenance.
