Project Management

• Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and


techniques to project activities in order to meet or exceed stakeholder
objectives and expectations from a project (from PMI).

• Project management is the practice of initiating, planning, executing,


controlling, and closing the work of a team to achieve specific goals
and meet specific success criteria at the specified time.

Operations Management

• Operations management is concerned with the ongoing production of


goods and/or services. It ensures that business operations continue
efficiently by using the optimal resources needed to meet customer
demands. It is concerned with managing processes that transform
inputs (e.g., materials, components, energy, and labor) into outputs
(e.g., products, goods, and/or services).

Project Environment

• Projects exist and operate in an environment which may have an


influence on them.

• These influences can have a favorable or unfavorable impact on the


project.

• Two major categories of influences are:


• Enterprise Environmental Factors (EEFs)
• Organizational Process Assets (OPAs)

Enterprise Environmental Factors

EEFs refer to conditions, not under the control of project teams, that
influence, constraint, or direct the project.

• OPAs include are the plans, processes, policies, procedures and


knowledge bases specific to and used by performing organization.

• Since OPAs are internal to the organization, the project team


members may be able to update and add to the organizational
process assets as necessary throughout the project.

• Two categories of OPAs are:


• Processes, policies, and procedures
• Organizational knowledge bases
