 Communication plays a major role in


developing a relationship. It can also affect
the relationship among family members or
management in any institute.
Communication should be straightforward.
What can make it complex, difficult, and
frustrating are the barriers.
 Physical barriers
 Psychological barriers
 Language barriers
 Organizational barriers
 Social barriers
 Cultural barriers
 Gender barriers
Physical Barrier is the environmental and natural
condition that act as a barrier in communication.
Physical distractions are the physical things that get
in the way of communication. Distractions such as
noise, poor lighting, uncomfortable sitting,
unhygienic room or an environment that is too hot
or cold can affect people’s morale and concentration.
Emotional or psychological factor also act as barriers
to communication. The communication largely
depends on the mental condition of a person is not
mentally or emotionally sound, then he cannot
communicate effectively. The psychological or
emotional barriers refers to the psychological state
such as opinions, attitudes, status consciousness,
emotions etc. of a person that deeply affects the
ability to communicate.
The language barriers usually arise when the
information is not in the simple language and
contains those or symbols that have multiple
meanings. When a person use inappropriate
words while conversing or writing, it could
lead to misunderstanding between the sender
and a receiver. The use of different languages,
technical jargons, accent and represents a
national barriers.
The factors related to organizational structure
rules and regulations authority relationships,
etc. may sometimes act as barriers to effective
communication. A distract environment,
overload information, unclear planning,
timing pressure, poor structure to the
communication and status difference are the
organizational factors that may act as barriers
to communication.
Social barriers to communication include the
social psychological phenomenon of
conformity, a process in which the norms,
values and behaviors of an individual begin to
follow those of the wider group. Social factors
such as age, gender, race, socioeconomic class,
and marital status may act as a barrier to
communication in certain situations.
Cultural barriers to communication. Culture
is all socially transmitted behavior, arts,
languages, signs, symbols, ideas, beliefs,
norms, traditions, rituals and values which is
learnt and shared in a particular social group
of the same nationality, ethnicity, religion.
Therefore, people of different cultures will
experience these culture factors as a barrier to
communicate with each other.
