Thomas Reilly Intro to Product Corn Flakes is a cereal that we thought we could make some changes to, so it could be more efficient for both the consumer and the producer. There was no way of telling how much cereal we were getting, and when we opened it there was not a lot of cereal, and a lot of wasted space. Product Packaging The first step to analyze the original packaging was to find out how much air space was wasted. To do this we first found the volume of the packaging, then we found out how much space the product actually used, and finally we found the difference. Air Space Product Volume Product Volume Next we found the percentage of air space that was wasted. To do this we found the difference between the amount of Air space that was available for the product and how much the product actually took up. From there we used the following equation (amount used - the amount of air space available) 100 =percentage of air space that was wasted. Surface Area We found the surface area of our packaging to learn how much material it took to make it, as well as to see how much material was wasted. To do this, we drew the net of out packaging. Then we found the area of all of the shapes individually, and finally we added everything up and got the surface area. The surface area of our product was 2274.495cm2. What we Changed The largest problem that we faced while redesigning the box was making the box smaller without making it look like less cereal. We came up with a strip of plastic that showed the amount of cereal in the box, so the consumer can see how much cereal they are really getting. Another thing that we changed was getting rid of all of the tabs on the box. While this did reduce the amount of material used, it removed a way to keep the box closed after you open it. So we added a little cut out on the side of the box to allow people to poor the cereal. New Volume Using the same calculations that we used to find the volume of the original packaging we found that the volume of our new packaging is 2730 cm3, compared to to the original packaging that had a volume of 4956 cm3, this is a major improvement. We were able to reduce the wasted air space from 48% to only 6%. New Surface Area When we started designing our new packaging one of our main goals was to reduce the material used. The original packaging surface area was 2274.495cm2 . Our new surface area is 1725.25cm2. In order to reduce this we removed many of the unnecessary tabs that were on the box. As well as we shank the box. Selling Points Our new packaging has many positives, they are
● More cost efficient
● More eco-friendly ● Easier way to pour the cereal ● Made of 100% recycled paperboard Conclusion In conclusion we were able to shrink the box to reduce unused air space and unnecessary materials. We added a clear stripp of plastic to let the customer see that hey were not getting less cereal. and cut out on the side of the box to allow for easier pouring.
