GRAPH OF THE
SINE FUNCTION
Graph of the Sine Function
𝒚 = 𝒄𝒐𝒔 𝒙
GRAPH OF THE TANGENT FUNCTION
AMPLITUDE AND
PERIOD
AMPLITUDE- half the vertical distance
form the maximum height to the minimum
height of the function
PERIOD- the horizontal length of one
repeating pattern of the function
INTERVAL- the domain of one cycle;
written as 𝑥𝑏, 𝑥𝑒 , where 𝑥𝑏 is the beginning
and 𝑥𝑒 is the end.
To calculate amplitude and period, the
equation of our sine and cosine curves
have to be in a specific form. The
equations have to look like this.
𝒚 = 𝐀 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝑩𝒙
𝒚 = 𝑨 𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝑩𝒙
Once in that form, the parameters for
amplitude and period are calculated as
follows.
Amplitude = 𝑨
𝟐𝝅
Period =
𝑩
Example: 𝒚 = 𝟐 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝟑𝒙
The a-value is the number in front of the sine function,
which is 2. This makes the amplitude equal to |2| or
simply 2. The graph of the function has a maximum y-
value of 2 and a minimum y-value of -2.
The b-value is the number next to the x-term, which is
3.
2𝜋
This means the period is 2𝜋 degrees divided by 3 or
. So, the curve has a y-intercept of zero (because it is
3
a sine curve it passes 2𝜋
through the origin) and it
completes one cycle in degrees.
