INTRODUCTION
 Water plays an essential part in human life, be it for drinking , agriculture,
industries.

 Most of the source of water is river, lakes, underground water. But this has
to be stored for later usage purposes.

 In a country like India 70% of occupation is dependent on agriculture ,

which needs water for growth and cultivation of crops .

 So most of the farming methods needs to store water and supply it to farm
lands whenever required . The supply of water is done through pumps.
 The pumps used are run on electricity without which it doesn’t
function , and supply of electricity is a major problem in the country.
Which in turn effects the agriculture.
 This problem can be eradicated by use of pendulum based water
pump which provides alleviation of work, because it is enough to
move the pendulum occasionally with a little finger to pump the
water, instead of large swings. Using the minimum of human
strength in comparison to present classic hand water pumps enables
efficient application in irrigation of smaller lots, pump water from
water-wells.
LITERATURE REVIEW
 Vandana Publications

They developed “Hand Water Pump with a Pendulum” The pump is

made of pendulum, two-leg lever and cylinder with the piston which
pumps the water. Oscillation of the pendulum is maintained by
periodical action of the human arm. Oscillation period of the
pendulum is twice bigger than the period of the lever oscillation.
Piston of the pump has reverse effect on the lever and damps its
oscillation.
Hand Water Pump with a Pendulum

This project presentation shows the importance of a pendulum

pump which can be used as a supplementary device for pumping
water and is made to replace hand pumps. To get the water running
out of the pump, the pendulum needs to be out of balance. After that,
based on gravitational potential, the piston starts oscillating and the
continuous stream of water is coming out of the output pipe.

This paper discusses the importance of a pendulum pump which can

be used as a supplementary device for pumping water and is made to
replace hand pumps. One important feature of a pump with a
pendulum is that the work is alleviated or in simple terms it makes
work rather easier when is compared with a traditional hand water
pump. By the use of pendulum based water pumping system we can
increase the efficiency of the plant and reduce the effort, cost of
production, production time, manpower requirement.

This paper was published as a brief study on “A BRIEF STUDY ON

PENDULUM BASED PUMP “. This paper delt with the generation of
energy by using pendulum motion . The concept of that pendulum
motion has been implemented in our project.
OBJECTIVES
 The main objective is less man power.
 It can be installed rapidly at any place.
 The availability of the building materials for the pumps in
rural community.
 It is exclusive for rural areas where the water scarcity is very
high.
 It can be operated by any aged people and physically
challenged people.
 The capacity of the pump (i.e. the size of community for
which the pump can provide water).
 It is very economical to fabricate.
 The maintenance cost of the pump is less.

COST ESTIMATION
ADVANTAGES
 It uses the minimum of human strength in comparison to
present classic hand water pumps.
 In comparison to the hand pumps the energy required to initiate
the pumping process is significantly less for the pendulum
pump.
 It requires less water consumption.
 Since maintaining the oscillation of the pendulum does not
request any special training or dexterity, both parts of the pump
can be used to draw fluid from the source.
 Compact size, easy to relocate, less moving parts, hence less
maintenance cost
LIMITATIONS

 Less efficiency when compared to other device.

 Air leakage can affect the entire working of the whole
unit.
APPLICATIONS

 Drainage: Used to control the level of water in a protected

area.
 Irrigation: Used in small irrigation wells.
 Petroleum Industry: Used in every phase of processing of
petroleum, its transportation, and separation of the impurities.
 Steel Mills: Cooling water in steel mills can be transported
using a pendulum pump.
CONCLUSION AND FUTURE SCOPE
Conclusion
 On increasing the suction head, discharge of the given
pendulum system decreases.
 On increasing the mass of pendulum, discharge of the
given pendulum system increases.
 On increasing the angle of swing, the discharge of the
given pendulum system increases.
 It was concluded that human effort is considerably
reduced while pumping water by a pendulum operated
pump compared to a regular pump.
Future Scope
 It can be used where the shortage of power or electricity is a
major issue.
 From experimentation it can be concluded that the system is
practically feasible.
 Implementing a pendulum pump setup which uses gravitational
force only, leads to large amount of energy conservation
 This system is more efficient, considering the minimum efforts
required.
