LECTURE 1: Information Systems and
Information Technology

What is an Information System (IS)?

• set of interrelated components that collect,
process, store, and distribute information
to decision making, coordination, and
control in an organization.
INFORMATION SYSTEM
- Combination of people, hardware,
software, communications networks, and
data resources that collect, transforms
and disseminate information into an
organization
Computer-based information systems
-Use hardware, software, the Internet, and other
telecommunications networks, computer-based data resource
management techniques, and other forms of information
technologies (IT) to transform data resources into a variety of
information products for consumers and business
professionals.
• Four major resources of information system:
• People Resources
• Hardware Resources
• Software Resources
• Data Resources
Information system resources
1. People Resources
– - People are required for the operation of all information systems.

End Users
- (Also called users or clients) are people who use an information system
or the information it produces. Most of us are information system end users.

IS Specialist
- Are people who develop and operate information systems. They include
system analysts, software developers, system operators, and other managerial,
technical, and clerical IS personnel.
• Data a collection of independent raw facts and figures.
• Information-– is data that is made meaningful to someone.

Desirable Qualities of Information

1. Relevance
2. Completeness
3. Timeliness
4. Accuracy
5. Presentable
Three activities in an information system produce the information
that organizations need:
1. Input is the capture or collection of
raw data from within the organization
or from its external environment for
processing in an information system.
2. Processing is the conversion,
manipulation, and analysis of raw
input into a form that is more
meaningful to humans.
3. Output is the distribution of
processed information to the people
who will use it or to the activities for
which it will be used.
