Introduction to the photometer
• A photometer is an instrument that measures the strength of
electromagnetic radiation in the range from ultraviolet to infrared and
including the visible spectrum.
• Photometers measure:
– Illuminance
– Irradiance
– Light absorption
– Scattering of light
– Reflection of light
– Fluorescence
– Phosphorescence
– Luminescence
Lummer Brodhun Photometer

• Our LB Photometer is best in its class and precisely

developed.
• LB Photometer is used to compare the intensities of two
light sources. This is achieved by using a combination of
specially made prisms knows as Lummer Brodhun Cube.
• Also called “the light weighing machine”
Construction of Lummer Brodhun Photometer

• This Photometer consists of a metal box with two

entrances and an eyepiece as well as a slot which allows
a white magnesium carbonate disk to be mounted
between the two entrances.
• Light from each of the two sources enters through its
respective entrance and illuminates one side of the white
disk.
• The light that is reflected off each side of the disk is
directed through a right angled prism and towards a
Lummer-Brodhun cube.

Working of Lummer Boudhun Photometer

• The heart of the Lummer Boudhun photometer is the

Boudhun cube
• The Bodhun cube consists of the two triangular prism.
One of them is slightly polished to give it a convex shape.
• one Prism generates a halo of the light while the other
generates the light spot.
• When the intensity of the both lights are equal, then the
whole screen is seen with a single light intensit.

Transmission coefficient: The ratio of output light intensity to
the input light intensity.
