BOTANY(Hons)3rd year
HOSTELS,PG’S OR FLATS
This survey aims to find out which place is more economical to live in,college
hostel’s ,Pg’s ,flats. It also aims to know that upto which extent the following
reports of newspapers are correct, which talks about the deficiency of hostel
seats for students in DELHI UNIVERSITY(DU).
DU official said they receive about 3 lakh applications per year for admissions
in graduate and post graduate courses out of which 2 lakh students are
outstation students.DU gives admissions to atleast 60,000 students per year
and has minimum regular strength of 1.8 lakh and has only 6,040 hostel
seats(3,283 girls + 2757 boys). This forces many poor students who do not get
hostel accommodation to live with friends or relatives, and if all else fails, on
the footpath.

Central tendency is defined as “the statistical measure that identifies a single value as representative of an
entire distribution.” It aims to provide an accurate description of the entire data. It is the single value that is
most typical/representative of the collected data. The term “number crunching” is used to illustrate this
aspect of data description. The mean, median and mode are the three commonly used measures of central
tendency.
MEAN
Mean is the most commonly used measure of central tendency. There are different types of mean, viz.
arithmetic mean, weighted mean, geometric mean (GM) and harmonic mean (HM). If mentioned without an
adjective (as mean), it generally refers to the arithmetic mean.
ARITHMETIC MEAN
Arithmetic mean (or, simply, “mean”) is nothing but the average. It is computed by adding all the values in the
data set divided by the number of observations in it. If we have the raw data, mean is given by the formula
σ𝑿
ഥ=
𝑿
𝒏
Where, ∑ (the uppercase Greek letter sigma), X refers to summation, refers to the individual
value and n is the number of observations in the sample (sample size). The research articles
published in journals do not provide raw data and, in such a situation, the readers can
compute the mean by calculating it from the frequency distribution (if provided).
Where, f is the frequency and X is the midpoint of the class interval and n is the number of
observations. The standard statistical notations (in relation to measures of central tendency) .
Readers are cautioned that the mean calculated from the frequency distribution is not
exactly the same as that calculated from the raw data. It approaches the mean calculated
from the raw data as the number of intervals increase
MEDIAN
Median is the value which occupies the middle position when all the observations are arranged in an ascending/descending
order. It divides the frequency distribution exactly into two halves. Fifty percent of observations in a distribution have scores
at or below the median. Hence median is the 50th percentile.Median is also known as ‘positional average’.To calculate Mean
Advantages
Disadvantages
1.It does not take into account the precise value of each observation and hence does not use all information available in the
data.
2.Unlike mean, median is not amenable to further mathematical calculation and hence is not used in many statistical tests.
3.If we pool the observations of two groups, median of the pooled group cannot be expressed in terms of the individual
medians of the pooled groups.
