VISIT 1
• OBJECTIVE: Educating farmers about use of safety equipments while dealing with
agrochemicals.
• Scope:
• The extent of our study is to educate and create awareness among the farmers of
Naande and Chaande villages.
• Methodology:
• The pilot study was based on the semi-structured questionnaire where the
farmers where asked about the crops and the application of pesticides by them.
• The focus of the questionnaire was majorly on whether the farmers were aware
about the harmful effects of the pesticide and the safety equipments needed to
protect them from the harmful effects.
VISIT 1
• Discussion and findings
• No. of farmers contacted- 5
• Point of contact- Mr. Atma Ram Sasar

• Names of the farmers-

• Mr. Gulab Babarao Darade
• Mr. Atma Ram Sasar
• Mr. Sandeep Patil
• Mr. Ram Waykar

FINDINGS
• We found that paddy, sugarcane, groundnut, tomato were the major crops
grown in the region.
• The farmers belonged to the marginal category and were into the farming
for more than 20 years In paddy, the farmers were majorly growing Indrani
variety of paddy.
• The application of pesticides was widespread in the two villages. The major
type of pesticide used were Laudis, Nativo, Tanmar.
• Farmers were not taking any precautionary measures against the pesticide
application.
• There were no post application measures practiced by the farmers.
• The farmers lacked knowledge about IPM methods ,bio pesticides and
various harmful effects of the pesticides.

VISIT 2
• As the Point of contact farmer Mr. Atmaram Sasar was outstation the
meeting planned was cancelled at the last moment
• We decided to carry on with the process of collecting the data from some
more farmers so we met few more farmers in the village.
• After a brief discussion with the farmers we came across the facts that
none of them uses the safety equipment.
• We enquired about any health-related problems faced in the family and
was told that Mr. Vikas faces breathing problem. It can be a result of not
using the safety equipment as we explained them about the how the
chemicals enter the body and causes various problems.
• They listened to what we said but also argued on some points. We have
asked them to come for the next meeting and they have agreed to come.

• APPROACH FOR THE NEXT VISIT:
• Increasing the size of the study and conducting a farmer’s workshop
to illustrate the safety measures to be taken.
VISIT 4
• OBJECTIVE:
To educate farmer about the mobile applications (mKrishi) in order to help them
with the application of pesticides during growing season of crops.
• About the App and benefits provided to the farmers
• mKRISHI® is a technology platform designed for farmers in India.
• The platform uses information and communications technology (ICT) to deliver a
range of services to smallholder farmers.
• Through their mobile phones, farmers can access advice and a growing range of
personalized services. The initiative’s value proposition is to increase agricultural
productivity, create fair and transparent markets, and collectivize farmers to
increase their bargaining power.
• The mKRISHI® initiative is run by Tata Consulting Services (TCS), part of the Tata
Group.
• EXPERIENCE OF THE FARMERS ALREADY USING mKRISHI
• Madhav’s story:
• Madhav is a progressive farmer, who grows paddy, eggplant, okra and groundnut on 12
acres of land owned jointly by him and his family members. He uses 1.5 acres to cultivate
vegetables. According to Madhav, a lack of both labor and financing for farming activities
are the two major problems faced by him. In the past, Madhav used to spray pesticides
on his okra six times, as recommended by the local shopkeeper. Based on the advice of
an mKRISHI® expert, he switched to a different brand/composition of pesticide which
cost 50 per cent less and required only four sprays. Following this advice, Madhav saw a
15 per cent increase in yield.
• Estimated financial benefit:
• • Total increase in yield = 504 Kg or 15 per cent
• • Total decrease in cost = $89 (INR 5,600) or 19 per cent
• • Total increase in profits = $208 (INR 13,160) or 88 per cent
