Input for design calculations:

– Suncor STD 0300

– Suncor Specification SP200-M-1-1
– NBC 95 / ABC 97
Loads:

– Environmental Loads:
– Wind
– Snow + Rain
– Temperature etc.
– Operation Loads
– Pipe Operating Contents
– Friction Loads
– Anchor Loads etc.
Exposure Conditions:

– Inside / Outside building

– For Piperacks inside building do not
combine Environmental loads with
operation loads, also use 1 in 10 years
wind for the design.
Model Clips:

Get latest set of model clips from the designers

Model clips should show
diameter of all the lines +
insulation thickness +
relative location from column.
Stress GA’s or Stress ISO:

Obtain latest copy of stress from

piping buddy or
stress engineer.
Apply real anchor forces at the locations indicated
by Stress (do not put min standard anchor loads if
they do not exist on piping GA)

Use 10% friction as per STD 0300 clause 3.15.2 for

designing the columns, girders and vertical braces
Model Set-up:

Introduce appropriate
I) support and
II) member end conditions.

Determine the location of expansion joints.

Load Combinations:

Use appropriate load combinations depending upon

exposure conditions.

Inside Building
(No environmental load with Operation loads)

Outside Building
Basis Analysis (In Place Analysis):
Conduct a P-Delta analysis of the model.
Serviceability Check:
Check serviceability under serviceability limit state load
combinations. Make sure deflection is within limits for all levels.
Strength Check:
• Assign appropriate buckling lengths for design of members.
• Use appropriate material strength
• Check utilization ratios
• Optimize beam column sizes based on Suncor Spec SP200-M-1-1
requiring minimum stiffening.
• Verify base plate size, thickness, weld size and provide sketches
• Assess the requirement for stiffening or additional bracing at big anchor
force locations.
• Extract connection design loads for struts, bracing and column splices
(Set 1).
Analysis 2 (Transverse beam check)
 Use 15% friction as per STD 0300 clause 3.15.2 for checking
the beams carrying pipes.

 Apply 2x anchor load to account for top flange loading due to

anchors in the longitudinal direction.
This assumption is based on the fact that only top flange resists the weak axis
bending due to pipe anchor loads.

Strength Check:
 Check transverse beam utilization

Extract connection design loads for transverse beams carrying pipes

(Set 2).
Analysis 3 (Transportation Check):
 Set-up transportation model with appropriate loads applied to
account for vertical, longitudinal and transverse acceleration values
(use empty piping, no friction or anchor load, wind 1/10 years).

 Check serviceability and strength.

 Extract connection design forces (Set 3).

 Check stiffening requirement under transportation beam, depending

upon magnitude of vertical and lateral load
Analysis 4 (Lift Check)
 Set-up lifting model with appropriate loads applied (use empty loads
for pipes).

 Check serviceability and strength.

 Find Safe working load, based on appropriate rigging factor, select an

appropriate lift lug.

 Provide final connection design forces by comparing Sets 1, 2 & 3.

Local Design
 Provide local design for
 misc. pipe supports,
 platforms,
 exp joints,
 lifting lugs
 , splices
(or refer to standard dwgs.)

Check for any torsion on beams, and check all other steel not
covered in In Place Analysis
 Provide details for any special requirements (if any) like platforms, pipe penetrations,
base plates, lifting lugs, splices, stiffeners, etc…
-cont’d Local Design
 Provide details for any special requirements (if any) e.g,
 platforms,
 pipe penetrations,
 base plates,
 lifting lugs,
 splices,
 stiffeners, etc…
Additional checks

Confirm

 Piling

 Foundation

 Anchor bolt design

Special Announcement
For future Piling IFC’s we have to provide sustained / transient and frost
uplift loads in our piling schedule.

Transient and frost capacity of a certain pile diameter and length will be
provided to the group in the form by the end of next week in the form
of tables.

Sustained loads (due to gravity loads) may not be present for a simple
piperack structure.
