IMPROVING THE GRADE-7

STUDENTS’ WORD BANK

THROUGH THE USE OF
VOCABULARY BINGO
CONTEXT
AND
RATIONALE
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Language plays a vital role in the lives of

English is one of the

the students. It is used not just in

communication, but also in the academe.
It encompasses of the five macro skills
such as reading, writing, speaking,
listening, and viewing.
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

According to Allen (1983), to master

English is one of the

the language, the students must have a

wide range of vocabulary. It is one of
the basic components of the language
which help them in mastering the other
macro skills.
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

However, it can be observed that the

word bank of the Grade 7 students is one
of the challenges. They have limited
range of vocabulary which leads to
difficulty in language acquisition.
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

component of academic language.
Thornbury (2002) holds that language
production will be hampered because of
lack of vocabulary.
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

One of the basic competencies where the

students had a difficulty with is under
vocabulary development. They
performed poorly in distinguishing
between slang and colloquial expressions
in conversations.

CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Other competencies that the students

had a difficulty with in the first quarter
are related to their word bank. Not only
this problem affects the language
production of the students, but also
their reading comprehension.
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

It is apparent that limited vocabulary

leads to difficulty in comprehending
texts. This is evident during reading
activities when students cannot
answer comprehension questions.
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

One way to attend to this problem is

through deviating from the traditional
way of teaching vocabulary. Using
vocabulary bingo is an example of an
innovation which can be used to
improve students’ word bank.
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

A more specific way that teachers

can use in order to keep diversity
within the classroom is to not be
afraid of using games as a teaching
method along with other methods.
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE
According to the national curriculum, games
can be a good teaching method such as role
playing games, imitation games, theatrical
expression and problem solving activities.
These are especially fitting for all stages of
language learning (Aðalnámskrá grunnskóla.
Erlend mál.2007.p. 12).
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

During the learning process, it is critical to

stimulate and maintain learners’ learning
motivations to achieve the predefined
learning objectives. The vocabulary bingo is a
specific example of a game which can be
utilized in the language teaching.
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE
It is a useful vocabulary consolidation
technique which caters to the learners at the
intermediate level and above. It is an ideal tool
in assessing or teaching English for Specific
Purposes (ESP) and may also be used for the
same purpose in teaching general English.
(Kavaliauskien, 2010)
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Thus, this shed light in improving the

word bank of the Grade 7 students as an
intervention tool. Furthermore, it aims to
make teaching engaging and fun with a
purpose of upgrading their vocabulary
level.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS

a. What is the vocabulary level of the

grade 7 Aquarius before using the
Vocabulary Bingo as an intervention?
RESEARCH QUESTIONS

b. How does the game Vocabulary

bingo improve the Vocabulary level
of the subjects?
HYPOTHESIS

There is no significant difference in

the vocabulary level of the students
before and after using the
Vocabulary Bingo.

aims to concretize the said vocabulary
foundation through the Vocabulary
bingo.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

For the students, this study intends to

improve the vocabulary level of the grade

DESCRIPTION OF INTERVENTION

The Vocabulary bingo will

serve as the intervention for
the students with beginning
and developing levels.
DESCRIPTION OF INTERVENTION

This process will be done

during the ICL – Friday – of the
grade 7 Aquarius. This will be
covering 9 ICL meetings.
DESCRIPTION OF INTERVENTION

The students will take a 50-item

Standardized Vocabulary exam. This will
help in classifying the students who are
under the beginning, developing,
proficient and advanced proficient
level.
DESCRIPTION OF INTERVENTION

After gathering the data, the participants will

be those under the beginning and developing
levels. The Vocabulary bingo will be of three
levels: novice, intermediate, and advance.
DESCRIPTION OF INTERVENTION

accomplish one bingo card every ICL.
DESCRIPTION OF INTERVENTION

In the intermediate level, they must

accomplish one bingo card. They will also fill
the blanks using the words given in the bingo
cards in every sentence that the teacher will
be giving.
DESCRIPTION OF INTERVENTION

Upon finishing the novice and intermediate

their ticket to the advanced level. For this
level, much complex patterns will be given,
and in order for the student to get the

sentence.
DESCRIPTION OF INTERVENTION

For those belonging to proficient and advanced

proficient, they will be given a short story book.
They need to complete a set of new vocabulary
words lifted from the story that they have read.
After 2 ICL meetings, they will exchange book
with their peers to widen their vocabulary.
DESCRIPTION OF INTERVENTION
