INTER-CONNECTED OFFSHORE POWER SYSTEM ENERGISATION STUDIES

PSCAD-EMTDC has been used by Mott MacDonald to assess harmonic over-voltages

due to transformer energisation in an offshore inter-connected system.
Studies of this type can be used to recommend the generation and load line-up
required to ensure that both the voltage dip and harmonic over-voltages are within
acceptable limits.

Torsional vibration of turbine generator by variable speed drives

Analysis of the potential of the inter-harmonic currents produced by variable speed
Load Commutated Inverter (LCI) drives to excite a torsional resonance mode of the
gas and steam turbine generators in a combined cycle power plant typically used in
remote gas compression facilities.

Key Model Elements:

 A six-phase synchronous motor
 A twelve pulse LCI drive comprising four, six-pulse thyristor bridges, was
implemented using the PSCAD six pulse bridge model. By varying the firing angles,
the power factor at the rectifier and inverter and dc power transfer can be adjusted.
Different dc link inter-harmonic options can be investigated.
 A four winding input transformerThe fourth winding was connected to a
harmonic filter unit comprising a number of high-pass and single tuned filters.
Manitoba HVDC Research Centre

Torsional vibration of turbine generator by variable speed drives

It has been shown that operating the drive at certain speeds produces inter-harmonic
current levels that will produce a pulsating current component that exceeds the
permissible levels and consequently a shaft torsional resonance will be excited.
PSCAD-EMTDC has been proved to be a very effective tool in assessing the critical
drive output speeds and determining amplitude of torsional oscillations at the design
stage of such projects.

Ea
'Weak system
bus"

This case is used to study flicker problems at BUS 2. Bus 2 and the large
compressor motors are fed by a weak 115 kV line. The 345 kV system behind BUS 1
has a comparatively low fault level, indicating a weak supply at this location.

The compressor torque characteristics are realistic and the variation (T vs rotor
position (mechanical)) is stored in a file and is used in the simulation.

Due to the torque and hence the current variation of the compressor load, a voltage
flicker at a low frequency is observed at BUS 1. (and BUs 2 as well)

Appropriately controlled TCR with necessary harmonic filters is a solution.

 Vast selection of control blocks (control, logical,

mathematical) readily available.
Wind Power Manitoba HVDC Research Centre

PSCAD is a choice of major wind farm vendors, utilities,

consultants and researchers:
• Investigate advanced generation
• Design novel control concepts
• Low voltage fault ride-through requirements
• Harmonics and power quality issues
• Mechanical resonance problems
• Power electronic design
• Filters
• Fault contribution and protection of wind farm equipment

Modern wind turbines have complex array of control and protection

functions. EMT simulation is the only practical way to design and
coordinate such systems.
