GROUP: BIG HEROOOO 6

 An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or

temblor) is the shaking of the surface of the Earth,
resulting from the sudden release of energy in the
Earth's lithosphere that creates seismic waves.

 accordingly measured with a seismometer,

commonly known as a seismograph.
 monitors volcano, earthquake, and tsunami
activity, and issues warnings as necessary. It is
mandated to mitigate disasters that may arise
from such volcanic eruptions, earthquakes,
tsunamis, and other related geotectonic
phenomena

 provide information and services primarily for

the protection of life and property and in support
of economic, productivity, and sustainable
development
1. Where does this kind of event
occur?
• Earthquakes occur all the time all over the
world, both along plate edges and along faults.

2. What causes the natural

phenomenon?
• An earthquake is caused by the release of stored
elastic strain energy during rapid sliding along a
fault. Quakes occur when a fault (where Earth's
tectonic plates meet) slips, releasing energy in waves
that move through the ground.
3. How much warning is there?
• There's a lot of warning occurs when there's an
earthquake including an early warning system,
sirens by local units and transmitting messages
through cellular/smart phones.

4. Can it cause damage to people and

environment? If so what sort of
damage can it cause?
• Yes, an earthquake can cause landslides, mudslides,
and avalanches on steeper hills or mountains, all of
which can damage buildings and hurt people.
5. How are different people ( e.g,.
students, farmers, labors, and office
employees) affected when a natural event
strikes your community? Who would be
most affected?
• An earthquake may affect on different people
lives severly, it can cause of lot damage especially
on those who works in office and students. As it
may cause a destruction on buildings and
establishments, it might be difficult for them to
work and study without a proper shelter.
6. Does a reported natural
phenomena affect people all the
time?
• An earthquake doesn't affect the people all the
time because if an earthquake strike within a
place that no one used to live, then the casualty
might be none.
7 . How strong are the most
damaging events? List five
examples.

• The Great San Francisco Earthquake -- a 7.8

magnitude tremor it cause 3,000 deaths and
$524 million in property damage came from the
massive post-tremor fire

• Southern USSR: October 5, 1948 -- This

earthquake in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, killed
around 110,000
• Southern Chile (May 22, 1960): The strongest
earthquake ever recorded -- 9.5 on the Richter scale -- All
told, there were more than 5,700 deaths and $675 million
in property damage in Chile, as well as Alaska, Hawaii,
Japan, and the Philippines.

• Alaska (March 28, 1964): The most powerful tremor in

U.S. history -- lasting three minutes and measuring 9.2
on the Richter scale -- killed over 125 people and caused
$311 million in property damage.

•Peru (May 31, 1970): A 7.9 magnitude quake just off the
western coast of South America caused more than $500
million in damage and killed 66,000 Peruvians, with
building collapses responsible for most of the deaths.
8. How big should a natural
phenomenon be for it to be
considered a haard? Does size even
matter.
• Depending on what does it have, no size
matters. Whether it's an earthquake in a certain
place or a flood that stays in a barangay, as long
as people deals with this and threats may
concern, it could also be consider as an hazard.
9. Why do people live in areas
affected by a natural hazard?
• Some people live in areas affected by natural hazard
because they inherited the place, the place is
unusually productive that may support their needs
and or caused by overpopulation that maximize the
level of vulnerability.
10. How could people prevent
disasters when a natural hazard
strikes?
• We can't prevent disasters but we can minimize the
vulnerability of population in accordance of having
safety measure on what we will do when the
phenomenon strikes.
