About CUI
CUI is currently the subject of increased focus for the industrial process industries. Corrosion Under
Insulation (CUI) refers to the external corrosion of piping and vessels that occurs underneath ex-
ternally clad/jacketed insulation as a result of the penetration of water. By its very nature CUI tends
to remain undetected until the insulation and cladding/jacketing is removed to allow inspection or
when leaks occur. CUI annual global control spend is estimated as €2 billion yet there continue to be
CUI failures, many of which are significant in terms of safety, cost and reputation.

Dr. Clare Watt Dr. Steve Paterson

Principal CUI/RBI Integrity Engineer, Corrosion and Integrity Consultant,
KAEFER Isoliertechnik GmbH & Co. KG. Arbeadie Consultants Ltd.

Clare has 20+ years experience in upstream corrosion &
integrity management where she has worked for oil and
gas companies supporting operations. She was previously
UK Integrity Advisor (ExxonMobil) and Senior Integrity
Engineer for asset life extension (CNR International).
Clare runs her own consultancy and has worked on a wide
variety of projects. She joined KAEFER in 2018 to assist
with the development of CUI services.
Clare has considerable CUI management experience in-
cluding improvement programs,inspection and refurbish-
ment upgrade campaigns, live equipment TSAapplication,
failure investigation, audits and creation of bespoke CUI
risk-based control methods.
Clare has been a member of the Cranfield University Cor-
rosion Training Program for the past 13 years and is an
active member of the UK Corrosion Management Com-
mittee. She has contributed to recent Energy Institute guid-
ance, including “Guidelines for the Assessment of Corro-
sion Threats in Risk Based Inspection” (principal author)
and the CUI update of Guidance for Corrosion Manage-
ment in Oil andGas Processing (April 2019).
Steve has over 36+ years experience in materials, corro-
sion, welding, inspection and integrity management. He
has extensive operational and project experience in the
U.K., Netherlands, Norway, Middle East and Malaysia. He
was previously materials and corrosion discipline head for
Shell’s upstream assets in Europe.
During this time, he was directly involvedin
integrity issues with CUI including investigation ofsignifi-
cant failures and execution of major
refurbishment programmes.
He has also been a member and chair of the Energy Insti-
tute Corrosion Management Committee including over-
sight of the production of UK Energy Institute “Guidance
for Corrosion Management in Oil and Gas Production
and Processing (May 2008)” and “Management ofExternal
Coatings for Corrosion”.
Since retiring from Shell in May 2017 he has taken on a
number of consultancy projects related to
corrosion management. He has been appointed
External Lecturer in Corrosion Management at Robert
Gordon University (Aberdeen) and is also a review panel
member of the Oil and Gas Innovation Centre. Steve was
approached by KAEFER in May 2018 to join as a consul-
tant for the development and
delivery of CUI control services.

Clare and Steve have worked closely with Stefan Winnik to ensure that none of Stefan’s unique knowledge of CUI is lost
and add their own experiences to this course delivery.

Clare, Steve and Stefan have contributed to KAEFER and TWI’s joint CUI paper which will be presented at Eurocorr
2019 “Using industry data to compare performance of differentrisk-based
methods for the management of corrosion underinsulation”. &
