4.1 LINEAR EQUALITY
The symbol ‘=’ is read as ‘is equal to’.
– For example,
a) 1cm = 10mm
b) 4 – 2 = 5 – 3
The symbol ‘≠’ is read as ‘is not equal to’.
– For example,
a) 1cm ≠ 30mm
b) 4 – 2 ≠ 5
If a = b and b = c, then a = c
-For example,
a) 2 + 4 = 6 and 6 = 7 – 1, then 2 + 4 = 7 – 1
Exercise Subtopic 4.1
1) 4 + 5 16 – 7
2) 8m – m 10m – 3 m
3) 3n +4m 7nm
4) 5p + p 6p -p
4.2 LINEAR EQUATIONS IN ONE

A linear algebraic term is an algebraic term that
consists of only one unknown and this unknown
is power of 1.
For example, 2x, 3y, 4p, -5q, -0.3m
a) 3x -4x²= 6
b) -5xy-x = 3y
c) 5x – 4 = 7 – 2x
d) 5x – 4
e) 3m + 2= 0
4.3 SOLUTIONS OF LINEAR
EQUATIONS IN ONE UNKNOWN
Determining the solution of a linear equation
in one unknown means finding the value of the
unknown in the equation.
The solution of equations are known as the
roots of the equations.
