Teaching Grade 7

Integer Addition
Using the Banking
Board
Florante P. Tabudlong
Riverside Integrated Secondary School
DepEd Butuan City, Caraga Region
Rationale
• After conducting a pre-test for Grade 7 mathematics during
the 1st quarter S.Y. 2017-2018, I discovered that my students’
average score in integer addition is only 47%.
• Perhaps a material is out there that can help me teach
integer addition easier, so I decided to conduct an action
research to solve my students low performance.
“Banking Model”
by Shutler (2017)

This research is
motivated by the Key
Literature of Shutler, The banking model for positive 5 and
Paul M.E. (2017). A negative 3 (Shutler, 2017, page 16)
Symbolical Approach
to Negative Numbers.
The Banking Board
Is an innovative
material made from
recycled items, like red
plastic caps, nails,
piece of plywood and
paint.

Research Methodology
Research Design:
Sampling Procedure:
One-Group Pretest-
Purposive sampling
Posttest

Data Collection:
Participants: A pretest is given in the first
40 grade 7 students day and a posttest after 2
weeks of intervention.
Results
1. What is the average test scores of students
before and after the intervention?
Pretest Scores Average Posttest Scores Average Increased by
47% 74% 27%
2. Is there a significant difference in the test
scores before and after the intervention?
T-test Significance Interpretation
4.23 0.0000 There is a significant difference
1. The use of the Banking
Board increased the
average test scores about
integer addition by 27%.
Implication of 2. Statistical t-test shows that
the Study there is a significant
difference in test scores
after using the Banking
Board.
Results shows that the use of the
Banking Board did increase the
test scores of grade 7 students
about integer addition.
Conclusions
Hence, using the Banking Board
is effective in teaching addition
of integers.
Recommendations
1. I recommend grade 7 math teachers to use the Banking
Board, since its appearance can attract and increase grade
7 students curiosity about addition of integers.
2. I also recommend its use to elementary math teachers,
since the appearance of the Banking Board resembles
familiar board games elementary students love to play.
