WORK AND ENERGY


WHAT IS WORK?

 Has many meaning:  SCIENCE-work is an abstract idea


related to energy .
 What is your work?- job or
employment
 I’ll meet you after work -  When work is done it is
occupation or undertaking accompanied by a change in
energy.
 Have you done your homework? -
task or activity  When work is done by an object it
loses energy and when work is
done on an object it gains energy.
WORK IS DONE

there must be force applied to it and the


object moves in the direction of the applied
force.
WORK IS DONE
If the object you push moves a distance in the direction towards which you are
pushing it
NO WORK IS DONE
if the force you exert does not make the object move in the same direction as
the force you exerted
NO WORK IS DONE

if the force you exert does not make the object


move in the same direction as the force you
exerted. EXAMPLE : A WAITER CARRYING A TRAY

1.Which of the four situations demonstrated or showed that work is
done? Why?
2. Why do you think situation number 3 did not show that no work is
done? Why?
3. What is the effect of the force the object?
4. How will you relate the force and the direction of the motion?
5. When can we say that work is done?
AGREE OR DISAGREE
Ask the students to take a stand by showing thumbs up or thumbs
down sign with the following statements.
1. Work does not necessarily mean physical labor.
2. If there is displacement in the same direction of the force then
there is work automatically.
3. Work done at a very limited time frame means there is high
power output.
4. If there is no force exerted, there won’t be any work output.
5. If force and distance move at an angle there is work one.
Identify situations in which work is done and in which no work is done.
Write W if the situation shows work and NW if no work

1. Lifting a box from the floor.

4. Carrying a bag of grocery
5. Raising a flag during the flag ceremony
