ORPHANAGE CUM OLD AGE HOME
INTRODUCTION
Childhood is a tender and delicate stage in the life span of a human being. At this stage
people require a great deal of care, love and nurture in order to have a robust set of values
and morals. The required care, love and nurture are generally imparted to us by our families.
But there are many children not fortunate enough ,talking about orphans and not having a
family doesn’t make them any less of a human. They too have a right to have a comfortable
shelter just like us.
Old age homes are meant for senior citizens who suffer with a problem in staying with their
children at home or are destitute. These homes are for older people who have nowhere to
go and no one to depend on. These homes create a friendly and family like atmosphere for
the elderly people where they can share their joys and sorrows and live happily.
“BLENDING THE EXPERINCED WITH THE NEW EXPERIENCERS”
AIM
The aim of the project would be to establish a mutual relationship amongst the two groups.
The elderly would act as a parents while the children would be a source of happiness,
someone in need, a responsibility. The elderly could play an important role in the children's
lives, likewise the children could play an important role in lives of the elderly. The project
also encourages people from outside to mingle with the people living in the home. This is
done through community activities, library, computer lab, spaces for art and craft, music
and dance and vocational workshop spaces. One would also have to cater to the needs and
requirements of an elderly and children at one place but they would have to function
independently.
NEED OF THE PROJECT

1. The elderly need inclusion in a space where they are respected while children need to
be guided and loved by an elderly figure.
2. Discourage begging and other things children may possibly retort to in absence of
shelter, food and a positive guidance in life.
3. Discourage depression in the elderly.
4. Inculcate values of care and respect for the elderly in children, preparing the children
of today to create an age friendly society.
5. Help them in getting better placements for earnings.
6. Making them learn something that would help them in earning a better income,
possibly by some vocational training courses.
7. Save them from difficulties either by police or someone else.
8. Help them learn moral values.
METHODOLOGY
The building should be designed taking into consideration the differential needs, tastes and
aspirations of the residents. In particular, it should cater to the physical needs of the residents
– sleep, rest, food, pure air, pure water and clean environment. Next comes safety needs:
general house safety, avoidance of pollution, accident, abuse. Then comes the psychological
needs: contact, experience, privacy, activity, togetherness.
Land
The suitability of a site and of its environment for setting up an old age home must be carefully
examined before a project is embarked.
Landscaping
The old age home should look like a living place – a home, not just a public building. It should
preferably have enough greenery, flowers and foliage around . There should be convenience
for benches to be placed in the shady area for the comfort of the older people.
Walkways
The land should have enough space for walkways as the residents would like to take a stroll
during leisure times.
