Internet of things
 The Internet of things (IoT) is the
network of physical devices, vehicles,
home appliances and other items
embedded with electronics, software,
sensors, actuators, and network
connectivity which enables these
objects to connect and exchange data.

o Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its

embedded computing system but is able to inter-operate
within the existing Internet infrastructure.
The IoT allows objects to be sensed or controlled remotely
across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities
for more direct integration of the physical world into
computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency,
accuracy and economic benefit in addition to reduced human
intervention.
When IoT is augmented with sensors and actuators, the
technology becomes an instance of the more general class of
cyber-physical systems, which also encompasses technologies
such as smart grids, virtual power plants, smart homes,
intelligent transportation and smart cities.
Raspberry pi
 The Raspberry Pi is a low-cost credit-card sized
single-board computer.
 The Raspberry Pi was created in the UK by the
Raspberry Pi Foundation. The Raspberry Pi
Foundation's goal is to "advance the education
of adults and children, particularly in the field
of computers, computer science and related
subjects.
 Many people have used the Raspberry Pi to
make things like cameras, gaming machines,
robots, web servers and media centres.
Generations:
Raspberry Pi 1 Model A&B(2012)
Raspberry Pi 1 Model A+&B+(2014)
Raspberry Pi 2(2015)

Home automation
 Home automation system achieved great popularity in the
last decades and it increases the comfort and quality of life.
 Nowadays most home automation systems consist of a
smartphone and microcontroller.
 A smart phone application is used to control and monitor
the home appliances using different type of
communication techniques.
 The working principle of different type of wireless
communication techniques such as ZigBee, Wi-Fi ,
Bluetooth, En Ocean and GSM are studied and their
features are compared with each other so the users can
choose their own choice of technology to build home
automation system.
 The use of control systems and information technologies
to reduce the need for human work in the production of
goods and services.
 No matter how technologically behind-the-times you
think you are, you likely use some form of automation in
your home every day
Home automation using raspberry pi based on IoT
 Internet of things is a technology of the future that has already started to touch
our homes.
 Here we propose an IOT based home automation system using raspberry pi
that automates home appliances and allows user to control them easily through
internet from anywhere over the world.
 Our proposed system consists of a microcontroller based circuit that has lights
and fan connected to it along with LCD display and Wi-Fi connector interfaced
with raspberry pi.
 Our system interacts with out online IOT system that IOT Gecko free web
interface for controlling our home appliances with ease.
 After linking with IOT Gecko, the user is allowed to send load switching
commands over IOT to our circuit.
 The circuit receives the commands over IOT by connecting to internet using
wifi connector and then the raspberry processor processes these commands.
After this the processor now processes these instructions to get user
commands.
 It then displays these on an LCD display. Also it operates the loads (lights and
fan) for switch them on/off according to desired user commands. Thus we
automate home appliances over internet using raspberry pi.

Software Specifications:
 Windows OS
 Programming Language: Python
 IOT Gecko
Advantages
 User friendly
 Easy to access form any where
 Security
 Energy Efficiency
 Savings
Disadvantages
 System crashes due to any damage in the
interconnection
 Human errors: If the human does not handle the kit
safely or if he/she does not use the correct keys to
perform the operations, human errors may occur.
Human errors also lead to destructions of the
machine.
 Reliability: In very rare cases, the reliability of the
home automated devices varies (decreases). It depends
mostly on the technology used and the advancements
being done.
conclusion
 In this highly developing era, where directly or
indirectly, everything is dependent on computation
and information technology, Raspberry Pi proves to be
a smart, economic and efficient platform for
implementing the home automation.
 This paper provides a basic application of home
automation using Raspberry Pi which can be easily
implemented and used efficiently.
 The code provided is generic and flexible in a user
friendly manner and can be extended for any future
applications like power control, surveillance, etc,
easily. Moreover, this technique is better than other
home automation methods is several ways
