Technology?
O A broad term
O Deals with the process of using technology for
instruction
O Describes the technologies that facilitate access
to information of all types.
O Acquisition, processing, storage, and
dissemination of information in all of its forms.
O Evaluation, management, and integration of
instruction with tools available.
About Instructional Technology
Instructional Technology (IT) is a field concerned
with improving the efficiency and effectiveness of
instruction involving:

• designing instruction (including all the phases of

activity from needs assessment to evaluation)
• applying learning theory to instructional design
• selecting delivery systems and designing
techniques for a given delivery system
• assessing human characteristics
• conducting process and product evaluation
About Instructional Technology

Instructional Technology (IT) is a field concerned with

• managing change and adopting innovations

• building teams and managing projects
• integrating instruction with other factors that
influence human performance
• implementing delivery to reach learners when they
need it

Ways to Define Instructional Technology

There are many ways to explain IT. The current AECT

definition is:

Instructional Technology: The Definitions and Domains of the

Field
• “Instructional Technology is the theory and practice of
design, development, utilization, management and
evaluation of processes and resources for learning.” (Seels
& Richey)

• Instructional Design seeks to teach how to plan, develop,

evaluate and manage the instructional process effectively to
ensure improved performance by learners.
Ways to Define Instructional Technology

There are many ways to explain IT. The current AECT definition is:

• Instructional Technology's goal is to understand how people learn

and how to best design instructional systems and instructional
materials to facilitate that learning. We also use appropriate
technology to aid us in the design and delivery of the instruction.

• Instructional Technologists are today's problem solvers. They look to

understand performance problems and design solutions to those
problems. Sometimes the solution is instructional; other times the
situation requires a non-instructional solution. (Reiser & Dempsey)

“The Instructional design approach considers instruction from the

perspective of the learner rather than from the perspective of the
content, the traditional education and training approach.” (Morrison,
Ross, Kemp)
What do Instructional Technologists do?

O Identify and analyze problems of

instructional design.
O Devise and implement solutions to those
problems.
O Integrate people, procedures, ideas, and
devices for the purpose of providing tools
which enhance the learning process.

O Development of teaching and learning
O Applies theories of instruction, learning,
behavioral and cognitive psychology to
assessment, design, implementation, and
evaluation of instructional material.
O Applies research, theory, technologies, and
psychology to solve instructional and
performance problems.
O The particular approach used to achieve the
ends of education.
What do Educational Technologists do?

O Design instruction
O Produce instructional materials
O Manage instructional computing services or
learning resources collections.
O Apply theories of cognition and research to
utilize technology for the benefit of the
learner.

Instructional Technology is:
O The use of technological processes as a tool
specifically for teaching and learning which
facilitates access to information of all types.
 My personal definition:
Educational Technology is:
O The application of theory, technology, and
psychology to achieve the goal of education
and enhance the learning of individuals.
 Conclusion
O It would seem that Instructional and
Educational Technology are synonymous.
The simple definition for each makes the
distinction of their difference:
O Instructional Technology is the tool.
O Educational Technology is the procedure for
using that tool.
