# Assessing the Relation of

## Students’ Sleep Hours to

Performance in Statistics
The researchers would like to examine
the relationship between student’s sleep
hours and their academic performance in
Statistics & Probability. They randomly
select 10 students to know if there is a
significant effect between two variables.
The data is given below:
Student 𝒙𝟐 𝒚𝟐 xy
(x) & Probability (y)
1 8 93 64 8649 744
2 4 80 16 6400 320
3 8 92 64 8464 736
4 8 87 64 7569 696
5 4 81 16 6561 324
6 5 82 25 6724 410
7 6 87 36 7569 522
8 5 81 25 6561 405
9 7 84 49 7056 588

𝒏(σ 𝒙𝒚)−(σ 𝒙)(σ 𝒚)
r=
[𝒏(σ 𝒙𝟐 )−(σ 𝒙)𝟐 ][𝒏( σ 𝒚𝟐 )−(σ 𝒚)𝟐 ]

10 5354 −(62)(854)
r=
[10 408 −(62)2 ][10 73 112 − 854 2 ]

r = 0.88
The value of r indicates a relationship between the variables.
STEP 1: STEP 3:
𝐻𝑂 : 𝜌 = 0 𝒏−𝟐
t=r 𝟏−(𝒓)𝟐
𝐻𝐴 : 𝜌 ≠ 0
STEP 2: t = 0.88
10−2
1−(0.88)2
n-2 →10-2=8
𝛼 = 0.05, Two − Tailed t = 5.24
Critical Value = ±2.306
STEP 4:

## -2.309 +2.309 +5.24

Reject the null hypothesis, since the test value falls in the critical
region.
STEP 5:
There is a significant relationship between the students’ sleep
hours and his/her academic performance in Statistics &
Probability.
