Suspensions

characteristics
and uses of suspensions
What will you do to
dissolved
substances faster?
A small ball will be
passed while the music is
playing. When the music
stops, the one holding
the ball gives an insight
or learning from
yesterday’s activity.
Why some
solids mixed
with water do
not dissolve?
The combination of two or more substances does
not always result in a solution or a homogenous
mixture. This happens when substances that are
mixed together in each other do not dissolve in
each other. These mixture are called Suspension.
They are larger heterogeneous mixture. A
suspension is a mixture in which particles
settle at the bottom of the container upon
standing.
At first the particles are scattered throughout the
liquid. After standing for some time the particles in a
suspension separate. The heavier ones settle at the
bottom and the lighter ones remain at the top. Most
substances that are labeled with a “Shake Before
Using”.
Are you suspended? We will will
use the activity as guide in the
next slides. The list of materials
are below
MATERIALS:

PROCEDURES:
Task 1
1.Prepare a glass.
2.Fill the glass with half-filled water.
3.Add a spoonful of flour into the glass
then stir.
4.Observe and describe what happens.

Let’s answer the guide questions:
1.Did the solids used
dissolve in water? Why?
Why not?
2.How many phases did
you observe?
3.What type of mixture is
shown in the activity?

2. How many phases did you observe?

3. What type of mixture is shown in the

activity?
Solids that do not dissolve in water are
called insoluble materials.
For example, sand is insoluble in
water. The particles of sand do not
mix with the water. Instead the sand
settles at the bottom of the water
forming a sediment.
Some insoluble solids such as flour seem to make
the water appear cloudy. When the insoluble solid
is spread throughout the liquid, making it cloudy, it
is called a suspension.
What do you
know about
suspension?
You raise your Yes and No cards
as answers as I shows off the
pictures. You raise your YES Card
if the picture raised shows
SUSPENSION and No Card if is
not a SUSPENSION.
Sort the suspension mixture in
the list. Write your answer in
your notebook.
