2062: HOT ROLLED MEDIUM AND HIGH TENSILE STRUCTURAL STEEL – SPECIFICATIONS

Scope:
• This standard covers the requirements of steel including micro-alloy steel plates, strips, shapes and
sections(angles, tees, beams, channels, etc), flats, bars, etc, for use in structural work.
• The steels are suitable for welded, bolted and riveted structures and for general engineering purposes
• If welding required welding procedure shall be prepared as specified in the IS 9595:1996
Grades:
• There are 9 grades of steel as given in table 1 and 2
• There are four sub qualities ( A, BR, BO and C ) for grades E250 to E410 and two sub qualities ( A and BR ) for
grades E450 to E650.
A : Impact test not required; semi killed/killed
BR: Impact test optional; if required at room temperature; semi-killed/killed
BO: Impact test mandatory at 0°C, semi killed/killed
C : Impact test mandatory at –20°C, killed
Killed: Killed steel is steel that has been completely deoxidized by the addition of an agent before casting such that
there is practically no evolution of gas during solidification. It is characterized by a high degree of chemical
homogeneity and freedom from gas porosities.
Semi Killed: Semi-killed steel refers to a type of metal alloy compound of iron and carbon that has been partially
deoxidized with minimal gas release during solidification. Semi-killed steel presents a high degree of homogeneity on
the molecular level.
Impact test: IS 1757

• The Charpy impact (V-Notch) method is used to determine the impact strength of the metallic material.
• This test is all about breaking a selected test piece by one blow from a swinging pendulum, under defined conditions
hereafter, a test piece V-notched in the middle and resting on two supports. The energy absorbed is determined.
Test piece:
• The standard test piece shall be 55mm long of square section 10 mm on all sides and at the centre of the bar a V-
Notch of 45ᵒ, 2mm deep, with 0.25mm root radius.
• If the standard test piece cannot be obtained from the material, one of the subsidiary test pieces having a width of 7.5
or 5 mm shall be used, the notch being cut in one of the narrower faces.
• The test piece is prepared in such a way that any alterations of the metal by hot work or cold work should be
minimized. There shall not be any grooves on the surface of V-Notch.
Test requirements:
• If the temperature of testing is not specified in the product standard, it shall be 23 ± 5°C.
• If the temperature of testing is specified in the product standard, it shall be adhered to within ± 2°C.
• For tests at temperature other than the ambient. the test piece shall be immersed in the heating/cooling medium for
sufficient time to ensure that the required temperature is reached throughout the test piece. It shall be broken within
5 s from the time of removal from the medium.
• If, during the test, the test piece is deformed but not completely broken the energy & orbed is indefinite. The test
report shall state that the test piece was unbroken by x j.
Inspection Process for Galvanized Material:
Check Purchase Order (PO) for conforming:
Type of material:
Module Mounting Structures(MMS), Fasteners(Bolts, Nuts, and Washers), Flats and rods used for earthing.
Metal structures used Power Substations(PSS) etc.,
Other details of Product:
Quantity of material ordered, Name of the plant to which material is ordered and the company received the order, PO Number.
Check Quality Assurance Plan (QAP) to conform the scope of inspection:
P: Perform, R: Review, W: Witness
Review:
1 Raw Material Test Certificates (RMTC’s) should satisfy the requirements as per IS 2062.
2 Calibration certificates of measuring equipment's used during the inspection.
3 Internal Inspection Reports if provided.
Visual Inspection:
Visual Inspection is performed to find out defects like Ash Inclusion, White Rust, Flux Inclusion, Black Spots, Blisters etc.,
Dimensional Inspection:
Dimensional Inspection is performed to find considerable deflections in the dimensions of the produced product.
Test:
Mass of Zinc Test: 1 The test shell be carried out to find out the mass of zinc. The test should be performed as per IS 6745.
2 Requirements of Mass of zinc should be as specified in IS 4759.
Uniformity Test: The test shell be carried as per IS 2633, Knife & Adhesion test: These test shell be carried as per IS 2629
METHOD FOR TESTING UNIFORMITY OF COATING ON ZINC COATED ARTICLES: IS 2633
This test is known as preece test and is also called as dip test. Applicable for Sheet, wire, tube, bolts, nuts and other
threaded articles of similar size (hot dipped, electroplated, sherardized or sprayed coted materials).
Preece test should not be used for determining mass of zinc coatings as these are produced by different processes and
have widely different rates of solubility in copper sulphate solution.
Sample selected for testing:
• 100mm * 100mm piece shell be cut from a metal sheet.
• Not less than 150mm shell be cut from wires and long metal strips. Materials which are damaged and shear edges
shell not be considered as test sample.
• Material other than wire and sheets and if the surface of the material is inconvenient length small pieces of same
component not less than 90cm are cut from the material.
The test piece shell be cleaned with trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, rinse with alcohol, wash with water and
dried.
In some cases the copper sulphate solution don’t react on the test piece and a false deposit of copper will be appearing
on the test piece. In such condition new test pieces shell be selected and immersed in one part by volume of
ammonium hydroxide and nine parts of distilled water.
Add 36g of copper sulphate crystal in 100ml of distilled water and heat to aid the solution if heated the solution should
be cooled before neutralizing. Neutralize free sulphuric acid by shaking with exess of cardon
Temperature of copper sulphate solution should be maintained at 18 ± 2ᵒc to obtain 10% accuracy.
Specific gravity of copper sulphate acid should be maintained
Metal Arc Welding of Carbon and Carbon Manganese Steels Recommendation: IS 9595
This standard recommends general requirements for the manual, semi-automatic and automatic metal arc welding
of carbon and carbon manganese steel in all product forms including tubes and hollow sections, complying with the
requirements of 5.
Terminology:
Auto Contact Welding:
An automatic metal-arc welding process using covered electrode the covering of which is kept in contact with the
parent metal during welding.
Gravity Welding:
Metal-arc welding’ using a contact electrode supported by a mechanism which allows the electrodes to descend and
move along the joint under gravity.
Parent metal: The metals may be killed or semi killed, Carbon equilibrium of the metal should be maximum 0.53. The carbon
equilibrium is calculated by using the formula:
C+MN/6 + CR+Mo+V/5 + NI+Co/15
Note: This carbon equivalent formula may not apply to carbon manganese steels of low carbon content ( less than
0.10 percent) or boron containing steels.
