INTRODUCTION
 With the advent of technology, we see a large number of transactions and
processes in real life being done by the use of Internet.
 There is nothing that “cannot” be connected to Internet.
 The word “smart” is not confined to humans, as it is now being used to
describe how “intelligent” various systems/devices can be.
 Smart cars, smart homes, smart city, smart toothbrush, just everything has an
added buzzword, “smart”.
 There’s a lot more to this, we have smart technology in every other field
such as agriculture, environment sensing, logistics, retail.
 So, we will be talking about how smart retail enhances and eases the task
of buyers and the retailers.
THE PROBLEM
 How many times have you been confronted with the “out of stock”
problem while shopping for your favourite brand products?
 Have you been annoyed with the products belonging to different category
being stuffed onto some different shelf?
 While these may seem small problems, they do affect business owners
greatly.
 Many times, due to such errors made on the retailer’s front, causes losses as
a consequence of customer dissatisfaction.
THE SOLUTION: SMART SHELVES

 Smart Shelves, the electronically connected shelves which can

automatically keep a track of the inventory in a retail establishment is one
of the most feasible solutions to address this retail in store challenge.
 The smart shelf concept will enable the inventory and store executives to:
 Refill stocks from stock room as they get depleted from the store shelf
 Intimate the buying group about the demand and Out of stock situation
 Inform warehouse / Direct shipment vendor for immediate replenishment
 It monitors the retail shops by keeping a real time tracking on what
products are being taken from the store shelves and what is remaining.
 The real time analysis of data enables retailers to stock on more fast moving
products and reduce the number of slow moving items.
PRINCIPLE INVOLVED
 Smart shelving units such as cabinets, refrigerators, shelves, and displays are
outfitted with RFID hardware. Items are affixed with RFID tags and kept in
the unit to be inventoried and monitored.
 Each item placed in the cabinet is tagged with an RFID tag, and that
item’s serial number or identification number is associated with the tag’s
EPC number in a database.
 Using software, the readers and antennas can be set to either continuously
read what is on the shelves.
 The data is sent from the readers either to a local PC, or a cloud or
networked database.
 The software sorts the data into valuable information that can show
managers hourly, daily, or weekly inventory counts.
ADD-ONS

 Access control system can be added

 Electronic shelf labelling
 Smart shelves also monitor the life of items like checking the expiry dates of
food items, and replacing them with fresh stocks
 Reduces the labour work on the retailer’s end
