CASE STUDIES

1.0 GREEN ROAD APPROACH IN RURAL ROAD CONSTRUCTION FOR THE SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT OF NEPAL
1.1 Brief Info. About this case:
- Least Developed Countries” and to the “Most Seriously Affected
- Is a hilly country 77% land area lies on hills regions
- South-Asia Nepal’s income is low and remains dependent on the agricultural sector,
providing employment for 80 % of the population
- March 2005 Nepal has 17,217 kilometres of road.
1.2 WHY GREEN ROAD APPROACH, A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH?

• Minimization of slope cutting and preservation of the vegetative cover & Mass
balancing
• Not maximising cut area
• If conventional method, usually the waste materials are thrown away
• Damages to vegetative cover
• Apply mass balancing method of construction
• avoiding box cutting method
• Reused of excavated stone blocks, if are rolled down, than the need for
reprocure/repurchase

• Environment Friendly Construction methods

• Blasting which is frequently used in conventional approach is not
allowed in Green road approach
• Simple method like Chiselling and Hammering, Heating and
Breaking and Drilling is done to cut the rocks.
• Labour intensive methods, resulted in zero CO2 emission.
• Bioengineering
• use of the living plants to reduce slope instability and soil erosion

1.2 The data show that GRs can be constructed in relatively low investment cost and more
than 65% of the total construction cost stay within the local economy.
2.0 BAGBY STREET RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT, TEXAS, US.
2.1 Brief info about this case
•Bagby Street - one way southbound roadway near western edge of Midtown
• Reconstruction project was a result of drainage study in 2008 to address flooding issues in
area
• Existing drainage system had limited capacity and was inadequate for current
developments, the need to upsized .
•Project scope included 60-inch storm sewer replacement, waterline replacement, and
sanitary sewer upgrades
• Streetscape redevelopment included pavement reconstruction, landscape and hardscape
upgrades, and relocation of overhead utilities
• Catalyst for sustainability
•first project to achieve Greenroads Certification in Texas, receiving a Silver Rating
2.2 BEFORE RECONSTRUCTION
2.3 SUSTAINABILITY
Environment:
•minimize excessive use and non beneficial planting
•reduce heat island effect
•reduce noise pollution
•increase green stormwater use
•reduce potable water use consumption
•improve localized air quality
•implement Green Streets Standards

Community:
•provide community programming / interaction /function
•collaborate with community members
•foster unique neighbourhood identity and character
•improve way finding and visitor experience
•implement interpretive plan centred on green infrastructure
•engage community at key benchmarks
Art/aesthetic:
•provide a distinct and unique 'place'
•create a timeless experience
•focus on detailing
•implement public art as a long-term benefit to the new cultural art district
•create an authentic interpretive program
•provide composition of form, texture, colour, pattern in all materials

Economics:
•design and construct within budget
•tie improvements to potential return on investment (public and
private)
•limit impact on business during construction
•implement plan that is financially attractive for redevelopment
2.4 AFTER RECONSTRUCTION
3.0 Conclusion:
•Green Road Construction menguragi waste, polusi dan ramah lingkugan (Environmental
Friendy)
•Peran stakeholder (Permerintah, swasta, owner, contractor)
