Presentation
ISO 14000
• Defined as a series of international environmental management
standards.

• The standards specify requirements for establishing


an environmental management policy.

• Exists to help organizations minimize how their operations


negatively affect the environment.

• The ISO 14000 family of standards provides practical tools for


companies and organizations of all kinds looking to manage their
environmental responsibilities.
ISO 14000: History

• The first environmental management system standard, BS


7750, was published in 1992 by the BSI Group.

• In 1996, the International Organization for Standardization


(ISO) created the ISO 14000 family of standards.
ISO 14000 series
• ISO 14000 standards and practices can be applied to any
organization, regardless of size or industry.

• The ISO 14000 family includes most notably the ISO 14001
standard.

• Represents the core set of standards used by organizations for


designing and implementing an effective environmental
management system (EMS).

• Other standards in this series include ISO 14004, 14006,


14015, 14020, 14031 etc.
ISO 14001 Standard

• It does not state requirements for environmental performance but


rather maps out a framework that a company or organization can
follow to set up an effective environmental management system
(EMS).

• It can be used by any organization that wants to improve resource


efficiency, reduce waste, and reduce costs.

• main aim to assist companies in continually improving their


environmental performance and complying with any applicable
legislation.

• The standard can be applied to a variety of levels in the business,


from the organizational level down to the product and service level.
The basic principles of ISO 14001 are based on the well-known Plan-Do-Check-
Act (PDCA) cycle.

Plan: Establish objectives and processes required

Do: Implement the processes

Check: Measure and monitor the processes and report results

Act: Take action to improve performance of EMS based on results

• Assist companies with a framework for better management control, which can
result in reducing their environmental impacts.

• Minimizes the risk of regulatory and environmental liability fines and


improves an organization’s efficiency.

• Leads to improved public perceptions of the business, placing them in a better


position to operate in the international marketplace.

• Provides with a competitive advantage against companies that do not adopt the
standard.

• There is growing interest in including certification to ISO 14001 in tenders of


different projects.
