Introduction

Burj khalifa (original name Burj dubai ,rename to honour UAE

president Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan),a world tallest skyscraper With
a total height of 829.8 m (2,722 ft) and a roof height
(excluding antenna) of 828 m (2,717 ft). Construction of the Burj
Khalifa began in 2004, with the exterior completed five years later in
2009. The primary structure is reinforced concrete. The building was
opened in 2010 as part of a new development called Downtown Dubai.
General Information
It is located in ABU DABI(arabian desert) Capital
city of UAE.The owner of Burj khalifa is UAE
Government. It was built by contractor Turner
Construction, Laing O'Rourke.Artitects by Adrian
Smith, William F. Baker, Marshall Strabala, George
J. Efstathiou.
IT took 6 years to complete total structure.
Total cost of construction: $1.5 billion. it is a full
1,046 feet higher than the world's previous record-
holder, Taipei 101 in Taiwan.
World record hold by BURJ KHALIFA

• At over 828.8 metres (2,722feet) and more than 160 stories, Burj
Khalifa holds the following records:
• Tallest building in the world
• Tallest free-standing structure in the world
• Highest number of stories in the world
• Highest occupied floor in the world
• Highest outdoor observation deck in the world
• Elevator with the longest travel distance in the world
• Tallest service elevator in the world
• Tallest of the Supertall
World record hold by BURJ KHALIFA

• HIGHEST RESTAURANT FROM GROUND LEVEL.

• TALLEST MAN-MADE STRUCTURE ON LAND EVER.
• Highest fireworks on a building
• Highest BASE jump from a building
• World's highest New Year display of fireworks.
It has 2 components

• Structural
• Artitectural
Components
Structural has its

• Foundation
• Super structure
Artitectural
component
• The tower was designed
by Skidmore, Owings and
Merrill (SOM), which also
designed the Willis
Tower (formerly the
Sears Tower)
in Chicago and the One
World Trade
Center in New York City.
Burj Khalifa uses the
bundled tube design of
the Willis Tower,
invented by Fazlur
Rahman Khan. Due to its
tubular system,
proportionally only half
the amount of steel was
used in the construction.
• The concept of this building is inspired from a
flower ‘HYMENOCALLIS’. The HYMENOCALLIS, of
Amaryllidaceae botanical family is a beautiful flower
found mostly in Mexico and in southern US states
such as Texas.
• This flower has thin white petals elegantly tapering
outwards from central core.
• Here is a picture of Hymenocallis.

Design of
Burj Dubai
HYMENOCALLIS’.

• Burj Khalifa is based on the

symmetries of this beautiful
flower, Also the triple lobed
base of the building is based
on this flower.

• The concept is based on
buttress core concept
Importance of Y shape Structure

• Ist ,it maximize the floor area

• This design helps to reduce the wind forces on the tower, as well as
to keep the structure simple and foster constructability.
• The system can be described as a “buttressed core”, and consists of
high performance concrete wall construction. Each of the wings
buttress the others via a six-sided central core, or hexagonal hub.
This central core provides the torsional resistance of the structure,
similar to a closed pipe or axle.
As the site were desert,soil
were weak and erotic so
the foundation used there
is piles supported with
mat. The tower raft is
supported by 194 bored
cast-in-place Skin fiction
piles. The piles are 1.5 m in
diameter and 50 m long,
with a design capacity of
3000 tonnes each.

Foundation
The tower foundations
consist of a solid, 3.7-
meter (12.1-foot) thick pile
supported raft poured
utilizing 12,500 cubic
meters (m3) (16,350 cubic
yards, yd3) of C50 cube
strength (7.25-ksi) self-
consolidating concrete
(SCC). Reinforcement was
typically spaced at 300 mm
(12 inches) on center in
the raft,

Foundation
Super structure

• Superstructure of burj is made up

of reinforced concrete and steel.
Adrian Smith is the man behind
the structural and the
architectural design of Burj
Khalifa. The concept needs the
study of old tall skyscraper like
sears tower and soon.The endo
skleton is made up of Reinforced
concrete and exoskeleton is
made of steel.
Cladding of Tower
To prevent the internal environment safe from
the effect of deserty heat and light. from
outside
It is cladded with high-tech reflecting mirror
which form curtain wall.
Exteriorly the glass is coated with silver which
will reflect the UV rays incident in it while
interiorly it is coated with titanium which block
infrared.
The cost of one panel glass upto its installing is
approx.2000 US dollar .
Total 24000 panel which costs 48 million dollar
The length of panel is 6.5m and weight is 750 kg
Speciality of glass panel

• It should withstand the heavy sand

storms that with in include water and
dust.
• Prototypes were selected and with the
help of propellers artificially created
storm was allowed to hit the glass
panels at a greater Speed.
• The glass panels withstands the storm
up to 75km/hr
Speed of Construction

• per day expenditure of burj was approx. 1 crore dollar so it was very
necessary to complete this project with in time.
• In this project time is money.
• For speed construction, world largest and heaviest crane were used to
uplift material.(26 ton without load)
Time Period
• January 2004: Excavation commences.[23]
• February 2004: Piling starts.[23]
• 21 September 2004: Emaar contractors begin construction. [100]
• March 2005: Structure of Burj Khalifa starts rising. [23]

President of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan.[3]
• 10 March 2010: Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat certifies Burj Khalifa as world's tallest building
Casting of Structure

• The primary structure is

reinforced concrete.
• Burj Khalifa's construction
used
330,000 m3 (431,600 cu yd) of
concrete and 55,000 tonnes
(61,000 short tons; 54,000
long tons) of steel rebar, and
construction took 22 million
man-hours.
High performance concrete(HPC)

Ñ Low permeability

Ñ High durability

Ñ C80-C60 cube strength concrete was used

Concrete
Used Ñ It includes fly ash, Portland cement

Ñ Two largest concrete pumping machines in the world

were used for this purpose

Ñ For reducing cracks and to avoid from hardening due

to high temperature concreting was done only at night

And cool is supplied and ice is added to the mix.

Concrete used cont.

• The pump needs 630HP to pump about

25000 tons of concrete
• It had took about 14 mints for reaching
the concrete to the 150th floor
• They completed every new floor in 3 day
Wind system and
Engineering

• Burj top surface was made smooth and

direction was changed to fit with wind velocity.
• Glased balustrades which keep the wind from
blowing across the balcony.
• They made artectural divider to protect the
balcony from wind.
• They made trellises which stop the downdraft
pressure of wind.
• Inside they used wind alarm to warn the wind
condition.
Elevators and excalators

• The Burj can accommodate about 35,000 people

at a time.
• Consist of 57 elevators and 8 escalators
• The biggest elevator carries about 46 people at
a time.
• These elevators travel at a speed of 35km/hr
• The Burj has a service/firemans elevator which
have a capacity to hold about 5,500kg
• And this is the worlds tallest service elevator.
