Lubrication
Lubrication System.
 The engine lubrication oil is circulated by a gear driven pump.

 The oil is cooled and filtered.

 A bypass valve provides unrestricted flow of lubrication oil to the engine parts
if the oil filter elements become plugged.

 The engine also has a turbocharger oil accumulator. This accumulator


provides oil to the turbocharger during hot shutdowns and start-up.

 The rate of oil consumption is called Brake Specific Oil Consumption (BSOC)

Lubrication
Engine oil check
 The most accurate check of the engine oil level is
obtained when the engine is stopped.
 Engine damage can occur if the crankcase is filled
above the “FULL” mark on the oil level gauge (dipstick)
 An overfill crankcase can cause the crankshaft to dip
into the oil.
 This will reduce the power that is developed and also
force air bubbles into the oil.
 These bubbles (foam) can cause the following
problems:
1. Reduction of oil pressure
2. Reduction of the oil’s ability to lubricate
3. Inadequate cooling
4. Oil blowing out of the crankcase breathers
5. Excessive oil consumption- this can cause deposits to
form on the pistons and in the combustion chamber.
Deposits in the combustion chamber will lead to the
following problems:
1. Guttering of valves
2. Packing of carbon under the piston rings
3. Wear of the cylinder liner
