GOOD AFTERNOON!

8 TIPS TO MANAGE WASTE: THE CEVnian WAY!

1. If there are school supplies or equipment that are not needed or left
over at the end of the year, donate them to a local organization instead
of throwing them away. Work with the families and teachers to make
going “Back to School” greener too.
2. Use the composting program in the school canteen to reduce food
waste.
3. Pull together a recycling and waste management team. Your school’s
recycling team could consist of student leaders, custodian, teacher and
administrators.
4. Educate students and stuff about the recycling and waste reduction
program. No matter how small the recycling program is, educating the
students and staff on the “how” and “why” are vital to its success.
5. Materials such as aluminum, plastics and cardboard/paper are easy for
schools to collect and bale. Small vertical balers can be utilized by the
school custodial and maintenance crew to bale and store the recyclables
for easier storage and transport.
6.Get to know your local recycling facility, what they accept and how
materials should be sorted. Your school will want to create a long-term
relationship with the local recycling facility as you grow recycling
program.
7. Invest in waste reduction. As part of your school’s waste reduction
plan, recycling and waste management equipment, such as automatic
trash compactors placed in the high-traffic student areas make waste
management more efficient for custodial staff and reduce the number of
trash pickups.
8. Use special recycling programs for fundraising for the school. There
are many established buy-back and recycling programs that can help to
build teamwork and raise funds.

EFFECT OF WASTE
DISPOSAL
1. Bacteria, insects and vermin thrive from garbage.
Over flowing waste bins are an ideal breeding ground of bacteria, insects and vermin. The
flies that visit the garbage are also the same flies that roam around your lunch buffet and
drop their offspring on your plate. By doing so, they increase the risk of you contracting
with salmonella which causes typhoid fever, food poisoning and other major illness.
2. Overflowing waste causes air pollution and respiratory diseases.
One of the outcomes of overflowing garbage is air pollution, which causes various
respiratory diseases and other adverse health effects as contaminants are absorbed from
lungs into other parts of the body. Example of respiratory diseases are lung cancer, asthma,
common cold and others.
3. Garbage contaminates surface waters, which affects all ecosystems
Garbage and liquid waste that end up in water bodies negatively change the chemical
composition of the water. Technically, this type of pollution is called water pollution. It
affects all ecosystem existing in the water, including fish and other animals that drink the
polluted water.
4. Inefficient waste control is bad for municipal well being
Besides causing all sorts of health and environmental issues, overflowing garbage is a public
nuisance and eyesore. Everyone wants to live and visit places that are fresh, clean and
healthy.
5. Direct handling of overflowing waste exposes for health risk
Direct contact with waste can result in skin and blood infections through infected wounds,
various illness resulting from the bites of animals feeding on the waste, and intestinal
infections transmitted by flies feeding on the waste.
WASTE MANAGEMENT is something that
everyone needs to consider pretty seriously and it
needs to be implemented on a large scale in order
to benefit our planet.
