Role of Mineral in Economic
Development

 Employment Opportunities

Unemployment and disguised unemployment are


serious problem of Indian economy. In foreign countries
many people have employment opportunities from
minerals resources. Thus by extraction of minerals is
good sources of employment opportunities
 Industrial development

Many minerals resources like kerosene , petrol , diesel


etc are the basic minerals necessary to run the
Industries. Many machinery equipments are made from
minerals. Many industries are established in India, also
which helps in earning and gives employment to many
unemployment people
 Agriculture Development

Minerals are also used in manufacture of agriculture


tools and implements such as machines and irrigation
equipment for agriculture development. Minerals are
useful for the development if agriculture sector.
 Development of Transport and
Electricity

Mineral resources are also help to develop


transportation facilities. Different means of transport
like railway, aeroplane and vehicles run from the source
of energy which comes from minerals
 Minerals-Revenue and Foreign
Exchange

Developing countries earn a lot of foreign exchange


by exporting their minerals to developed countries in
crude form. Industries spread in the developed
countries based on their own resources in order to raise
the speed of growth and more faster national income.
Strategic Importance of Minerals

 Effect the political relationship between two nations.


 Minerals effect a nation to be powerful and self-
reliance.
 Used in making arms and giving edge in modern wars.
Need for conservation of minerals

 Minerals are non renewable resources.


 We are rapidly consuming minerals resources that
requires millions of years to be crested and
concentrated.
 So we need to use them in very careful manner, so
that it lasts for future generations.
Conservation of Minerals

 A concentrated efforts has to be made in order to use


our minerals resources in a planned and sustainable
manner.
 Recycling of metals, using scrap metals and other
substitutes.
 Improved technologies need to be constantly evolved
to allow use of low grade ore at low costs.
National Mineral Policy

 The NMP was implemented by Government in 1993,


for liberalization of the mining sector.
 The Aim of NMP was to encourage the flow private
investment and introduction of state-of-the-art
technology in exploration and mining.
 The Government replaced the NMP,1993 with a new NMP
on 13th march 2008
 The NMP 2008 provides for a change in role of the central
government and the state government
~incentivize private sector investment in exploration and
mining
~for ensuring level playing field and transparency in
the grant of concessions
~ promotion of scientific mining within a sustainable
development framework
