Effects of Air Pollution?
ACIDIFICATION:
Chemical reactions involving air pollutants can create acidic
compounds which can cause harm to vegetation and buildings.
Sometimes, when an air pollutant, such as sulfuric acid
combines with the water droplets that make up clouds, the
water droplets become acidic, forming acid rain. When acid
rain falls over an area, it can kill trees and harm animals, fish,
and other wildlife. Acid rain destroys the leaves of plants.

When acid rain infiltrates into soils, it changes the chemistry
of the soil making it unfit for many living things that rely on
soil as a habitat or for nutrition. Acid rain also changes the
chemistry of the lakes and streams that the rainwater flows
into, harming fish and other aquatic life.
EUTROPHICATION:
Rain can carry and deposit the Nitrogen in some
pollutants on rivers and soils. This will adversely
affect the nutrients in the soil and water bodies. This
can result in algae growth in lakes and water bodies,
and make conditions for other living organism
harmful.

GROUND-LEVEL OZONE:
Chemical reactions involving air pollutants create a
poisonous gas ozone (O3). Gas Ozone can affect
people’s health and can damage vegetation types and
some animal life too.
PARTICULATE MATTER :

Air pollutants can be in the form of


particulate matter which can be very harmful
to our health. The level of effect usually
depends on the length of time of exposure,
as well the kind and concentration of
chemicals and particles exposed to.
Short-term effects include irritation to the eyes, nose
and throat, and upper respiratory infections such as
bronchitis and pneumonia.

• Others include headaches, nausea, and allergic


reactions. Short-term air pollution can aggravate the
medical conditions of individuals with asthma and
emphysema. Long-term health effects can include
chronic respiratory disease, lung cancer, heart
disease, and even damage to the brain nerves, liver,
or kidneys.
Continual exposure to air pollution affects the lungs
of growing children and may aggravate or complicate
medical conditions in the elderly.
Effects of Land Pollution.
There can be catastrophic consequences of land
pollution in relation to humans, animals, water
and soils. The effects are even worse if the
garbage is not separated into organic, re-usable
and recyclable waste.
Contaminated lands and environments can:
Cause problems in the human respiratory
system.
Cause problems on the skin.
Cause various kinds of cancers.
The toxic materials that pollute the soil can
get into the human body directly by:

Coming into contact with the skin.


Being washed into water sources like
reservoirs and rivers.
Eating fruits and vegetables that have been
grown in polluted soil.
Breathing in polluted dust or particles.
Dump sites and landfills also come with serious problems
like …
Very bad smell and odour in the town.
Landfills breed rodents like rats, mice and insects, who in-
turn transmit diseases.
Landfills in towns do not attract tourists to the town. The
town will loose revenue.
Many landfills are always burning and they cause further air
pollution.
Effects of Water Pollution.
Water pollution is very harmful to humans, animals
and water life. The effects can be catastrophic,
depending on the kind of chemicals, concentrations
of the pollutants and where there are polluted.

This is the result of both garbage dumped by


individuals and dangerous chemicals legally or
illegally dumped by manufacturing industries,
health centers, schools and market places.
Death of Aquatic (water) Animals

The main problem caused by water pollution


is that it kills life that depends on these water
bodies. Dead fish, crabs, birds and sea gulls,
dolphins, and many other animals often wind
up on beaches, killed by pollutants in their
habitat (living environment).
Disruption of Food-Chains
Pollution disrupts the natural food chain as well.
Pollutants such as lead and cadmium are eaten by
tiny animals.
Later, these animals are consumed by fish and
shellfish, and the food chain continues to be
disrupted at all higher levels.
Diseases

Eventually, humans are affected by this


process as well. People can get diseases such
as hepatitis by eating seafood that has been
poisoned.
In many poor nations, there is always
outbreak of cholera and diseases as a result
of poor drinking water treatment from
contaminated waters.
Destruction of Ecosystems

Ecosystems (the interaction of living


things in a place, depending on each
other for life) can be severely changed
or destroyed by water pollution.
Many areas are now being affected by
careless human pollution, and this
pollution is coming back to hurt humans
in many ways.
Effects of Noise Pollution

Generally, problems caused by noise


pollution include stress related illnesses,
speech interference, hearing loss, sleep
disruption, and lost productivity.
Hearing
The immediate and acute effect of noise
pollution to a person, over a period of time,
is impairment of hearing.

Prolonged exposure to impulsive noise to a


person will damage their eardrum, which
may result in a permanent hearing
impairment.
Marine Animals
Marine scientists are concerned about excessive noise
used by oil drills, submarines and other vessels on
and inside the ocean.

Many marine animals, especially whales, use hearing


to find food, communicate, defend and survive in the
ocean.

Excessive noises are causing a lot of injuries and


deaths to whales. For example, the effect of a navy
submarine’s sonar can be felt 300 miles away from
the source .
Effects on General Health
Health effects of noise include anxiety
and stress reaction and in extreme cases
fright.
The physiological manifestations are
headaches, irritability and nervousness,
feeling of fatigue and decreases work
efficiency.
Republic Act No. 9512 – ENVIRONMENTAL
AWARENESS EDUCATION ACT
The Department of Education (DepEd), the Commission on
Higher Education (CHED), the Technical Education and Skills
Development Authority (TESDA),
the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD),
in coordination with the Department of Environment and
Natural Resources (DENR), the Department of Science and
Technology (DOST)
and other relevant agencies, shall integrate environmental
education in its school curricula at all levels, whether public
or private, including in barangay daycare, preschool, non-
formal, technical vocational, professional level, indigenous
learning and out-of-school youth courses or programs
Republic Act (RA) 8749: Clean Air Act (CAA) of
1999
• Provides for a comprehensive air quality
management policy and program which aims to
achieve and maintain healthy air for all Filipinos.
The Clean Air Act covers all potential sources of
air pollution, to wit:
(1) Mobile Sources (eg. motor vehicles);
(2) Point or Stationary Sources (eg. industrial
plants); and
(3) Area Sources (eg. wood or coal burning)
Smoke belching vehicles on the road will
undergo emission testing.
RA 9275: Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004
• The law aims to protect the country’s water
bodies from land-based pollution sources
(industries and commercial establishments,
agriculture and community/household
activities) It provides for a comprehensive
and integrated strategy to prevent and
minimize pollution through a multi-sectoral
and participatory approach involving all the
stakeholders.
RA 6969: Philippine Toxic Substances and
Hazardous and Nuclear Waste Act

The Act provides the legal framework for the


Philippines to control and manage the
importation, manufacture, processing,
distribution, use, transport, treatment
and disposal of toxic substances and
hazardous and nuclear wastes.
RA 9003: Philippine Ecological Solid
Waste Management Act (PESWMA) of
2000
• It provides the legal framework for the
country’s systematic, comprehensive, and
ecological solid waste management program
that shall ensure protection of public health
and the environment.
RA 9729: Climate Change Act of 2009

RA 9729 aims to systematically


integrate the concept of climate
change in the policy formulation and
development plans of all government
agencies and units, to the end that the
government will be prepared for the
impact of climate change.

Group Tasks
1. Discuss among your group members what theme/concept you
would choose that would reflect the assigned law/policy given
to you..
2. Using the materials provided, draw and cut –out your drawn
figures or images, create your group miniature of a healthy
environment with emphasis on the law/policy assigned to you
and have these placed in the illustration board.
3. Provide an area or space in the illustration board where you can
set –up a miniature placard of an “advocacy /slogan” that
supports or adheres to your assigned law or policy’
4. Your Advocacy or slogan shall be striking, motivating, inspiring
and inviting.
5. Have a group name, and let all group members sign with their
names as a sign of pledge in your miniature placard.
