WHAT
IS
GLASS?
GLASS

 refers to materials usually blends of metallic oxides,

commonly silica which do not crystallize from liquid to
the solid state

 is an amorphous and non-crystalline solid that is often

transparent
GLASS
 has widespread of practical and decorative usage
in, for example, windowpanes, tableware and
optoelectronics
A BRIEF HISTORY OF GLASS

 best known in Egypt for 5000 years but it originated in Assyria and Phoenicia

 (1st century B.C.) the invention of glass blower’s allowed glass to be heated to a
higher temperature and then blown and shaped

 (15th century) lead crystal, a highly prized glass, was invented by Englishmen which
caused changes

 (20th century) machine production began which resulted in advances in science and
technology, and increased research

Glass, an ancient building material that is
used until these days, is a known contributor to
energy saving on a very important
architectonic challenges of our age.
FUNCTIONS OF
GLASS
1. THERMAL INSULATION
> glass allows heat into the building to
warm the interior
2. SOLAR CONTROL
> tinted or colored glass reduces the
irritating glare of the sun
3. SAFETY AND SECURITY

> with the help of science and technology,

glass is less likely to break,
but when it does break,
it produces only small fragments that are innocuous
4. FIRE RESISTANCE

> there’s a glass that offer

increasing level of protection which is
measured in time periods of, 30
minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes, and
180 minutes
5. NOISE CONTROL
> glass has a dampening core so that sound energy
is effectively blocked from passing
6. DECORATIVE: INTERIOR DESIGN
> glass can have effects, patterns, and colors to be
used as decorative design
7. SELF-CLEANING GLASS
> glass has been coated with dual function layer (photo-
catalytic & spreading water evenly) to break down and wash
away dirt, especially in windows and facades
PROPERTIES
OF
GLASS
1. TRANSPARENCY

> a property which allows visual connection

with the outside world
2. Strength
> Glass is a brittle material, but with the advent of
science and technology, certain laminates and
admixtures an increase its ability to resist deformation
3. WORKABILITY

> it is capable of being worked in many ways

> it can be blown or pressed

> can be obtained with diversified properties:

clear, colorless, diffused or stained
4. RECYCLABLE

> glass is 100% recyclable

> broken or wasted glass are gathered for

re-melting
5. ENERGY EFFIECIENCY
and ACOUSTIC CONTROL
> glass withholds the natural light
of the sun that comes into the interior

> glass will be a barrier in order to

prevent the noise from outside
That
would
be all.

Thank
you!
