INTRODUCTION

• Cracking in concrete is a main concern throughout the

world because it cause loss of strength of structure with
time.
• Percolation of crack may lead to leakage problems, causing
deterioration of the concrete or corrosion of embedded
steel reinforcement.
• In recent years a bacteria-based self healing concrete is
being developed in order to extend the service life.
WHAT IS SELF HEALING CONCRETE

• Self healing concrete is a concrete which heals itself

when it comes in contact with air and water, it
produces lime on outer layer of concrete. It is
invented by Henk Jonkers.
• Self healing concrete is also known as “BIO
CONCRETE “ or “BACTERIAL CONCRETE”.
• It is specially made to increase the durability of
concrete structure by self healing action of that
concrete.
WHAT BACTERIA IS USED

Spore forming bacteria belonging to ‘genus bacillus’ are used as

thick wall.

WORKING PROCESS

• In SHC water seeps through the cracks, the bacteria get

activated from its stage of dormancy and starts to feed on
calcium lactate producing calcium carbonate, that acts as
a healing material.
Ca(C3H5O2)2 +7O2 CaCO3 + 5CO2 +5H2O
(Calcium lactate) (Lime)

• Cracks less than 0.2mm can be auto fill by healing.

HOW HEALING AGENTS ARE APPLIED

1) BY DIRECT APPLICATION
The bacteria and the chemical precursor are added
directly while making the concrete (10-20% by wt).
2) ENCAPSULATION LWA
The coarse aggregate is replaced by light weight
aggregate and bacteria and its food calcium lactate are
mixed to make the concrete.
TEST ON SELF HEALING CONCRETE

• In 2011, H.M. Jonkers does the case study on SHC.

• A small part of a structure is built with SHC material and
observed for 3-5 years.
• Structures were fitted with SHC panels and others with
conventional concrete.
• Results shows that cracks healed well and fast in SHC
panels as compared to normal concrete.
ADVANTAGES

• Helps to fill the cracks.

• Compressive strength of concrete is increased
• Reduction in permeability of concrete.
• Helps to reduce maintenance and repair.
• Reduction in corrosion of reinforced concrete

For 28 days (M20) Conventional Self healing

concrete concrete
Compressive Strength (MPa) 28.8 32.74

Tensile Strength (MPa) 3.26 3.73

DISADVANTAGES

• Cost of self healing concrete is double than traditional

concrete.
• Skilled labour is required.
• There is no IS code or other code available.
• Availability
APPLICATION OF SHC

• For water retaining structures.

• Highways and bridges.
• Long lasting river banks.
• Concrete floors, basement walls.
CONCLUSION

• SHC appears to much more efficient than usual concrete.

• Microbial concrete technology has proved to be better
than many conventional technologies because of its self
healing abilities, eco-friendly nature.
• By comparison, we notice that it has more advantages
than disadvantages and will transform concrete from an
Eco-harming into an Eco-friendly material
