MIDDLE AGES
Sewing was used for mending.

Clothing that was faded would be turned inside-

out so that it could continue to be worn, and
sometimes had to be taken apart and
reassembled in order to suit this purpose. Once
clothing became worn or torn, it would be taken
apart and the reusable cloth sewn together into
new items of clothing, made into quilts, or
otherwise put to practical use.
From the Middle Ages to the
17th century, sewing tools
such
as needles, pins and pincush
ions were included in
the trousseaus of many
European brides.
brought Chinese embroidery techniques to Western
Asia and Eastern Europe, while techniques originating
in the Middle East spread to Southern and Western
Europe through Morocco and Spain.
The Industrial Revolution

world's first sewing machine was patented in 1790 by

Thomas Saint.
Early 1840s

. Barthélemy Thimonnier introduced a simple sewing

machine in 1841 to produce military uniforms for
France's army.
1850s

Isaac Singer developed the first sewing machines

that could operate quickly and accurately and
surpass the productivity of a seamstress or tailor
sewing by hand.
2oth century and today

Sewing underwent further developments

during the 20th century. As sewing machines
became more affordable to the working class,
demand for sewing patterns grew.

to provide allowances in measuring the
actual fabric in the sewing process.
Ruler
Is used to measure short distance
and serves guide as a guide in
drafting lines.
Sem Gauge

A six-inch metal marking ruler with

a sliding marker used to measure

Tracing Wheel and
Tracing Paper

These tools are used at the same time; used

tracing wheel to transfer marking from the
tracing paper to the wrong side of the fabric.
Tracing

Tailor’s Chalk

Chalk marks easily and rubs off

easily for smaller indications on
patterns.
Pencils and
Pens
Chalk pencils are used for small marks.
Disappearing pens are a type of pen whose
mark disappears on your fabric within 48
hours and the other type washes off with

BACK
L-Square or Tailor
Square

Is used to draw perpendicular lines,

square corners and divide measurements.
Hip Curve

Pinking Shears BACK
Sewing Shears

7 or 8 inch blade lengths are most

common. Shears have one handle larger
than the other to make it best for pattern
cutting. The angle of the lower blade
allows it to lie flat on the cutting area
Scissors

 Shorter scissors are used for

clipping and trimming. The
handles are of the same size.
Seam Ripper

This small, short bladed tool is used

to rip incorrect machine stitches.
Thread Clipper

This small short bladed tool is used

for clipping threads and ripping
seams.
Pinking Shears

Pinking shears cut a zigzag edge and

are used to prevent raveling on raw
edges of seams.
EMBROIDERY SCISSOR

It has 4-5 inches finely tapered blades

BUTTONHOLE SCISSOR

This is intended for making

buttonholes.
Rotary Cutter and Mat

It is an adaptation of the giant rotary

cutter used by the garment industry.
Wax Chalk

this is available in black or

white and is used for woolen
fabrics.
