ALCOHOL:TEMPORARY

FUN WITH PERMANENT

CONSEQUENCES
(THE FRESH QUOTES)
RESEARCH REPORT
I.INTRODUCTION:

A.BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Alcoholism, also known as alcohol use

disorder (AUD), is a broad term for any drinking
of alcohol that results in mental or
physical health problems.(Google-Wikipedia)
B.OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Environmental factors and genetics are two

components associated with alcoholism, with
about half the risk attributed to each. (Google-
Wikipedia)
C.SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Prevention of alcoholism may be

attempted by regulating and limiting the
sale of alcohol, taxing alcohol to increase its
cost, and providing inexpensive treatment.
(Google-Wikipedia)
D.LITERATURE REVIEW

The World Health Organization, the European

Union and other regional bodies, national
governments and parliaments have formed alcohol
policies in order to reduce the harm of
alcoholism.Targeting adolescents and young adults
is regarded as an important step to reduce the harm
of alcohol abuse. (Google-Wikipedia)
II.BODY

There is little data available on the extent of alcoholism or alcohol abuse in the Philippines.
However, while there may be no official statistics available, the consequences of alcoholism are very obvious
in the community or inside homes. There are many undocumented cases of alcoholic persons who collapsed
in the streets because of drunkenness. Alcoholism is a growing concern in the culture and social life of our
country. In the recent years, only few alcohol-related cases have been recorded by the Philippine General
Hospital. For instance last year, only six patients were admitted in that state-run hospital.
This could be due to the fact that alcoholism is not considered a medical problem by most Filipinos. Most
Filipinos with an alcohol problem do not submit to medical treatment even if their condition is chronic.
Alcohol rehabilitation centres have low admission rates compared to similar institutions for illicit drug
dependency. The PGH alcohol support group centre offers treatment and counselling for its indigent patients.
For anonymity, patients from rich families go to private rehabilitation centres. There are also some NGOs
which provide similar services and carry out advocacy work. However, more effort is needed in the Philippines
in order to address the problems of alcohol abuse.(Joyce P. Valbuena

III.CONCLUSION

• A key obstacle to preventing underage alcohol use is the fact that young
people often are in situations where drinking is tolerated or even reinforced.
School-based interventions simply cannot address every situation.
However, community-based efforts—particularly when a school-based
prevention curriculum also is in place—can help reduce alcohol use among
youth and young adults. These efforts include limiting alcohol sales to
minors, increasing enforcement of underage drinking laws, and changing
alcohol policies at community events, as well as increasing public
awareness about the problems associated with underage
drinking.(https://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/aa83/aa83.htm)
