Op-Amps

(Operational Amplifiers)
Tutorial
Op-Amp Configuration:
Non-inverting Amplifier (Tutorial 1)
• The circuit in the figure uses an
op-amp which is otherwise ideal
except for having a finite gain A.
• Measurement indicates that
when Vo = 3.5 V, Vi = 3.5 V too.
• What is the op-amp gain, A?
• 1001

Non-ideal Op-Amp: (Tutorial 3)
• Revisit Tutorial 2 and 2 cont. and repeat the analysis for the case
where the op-amps have a finite gain of A = 1000.
• Hint: superposition may be used for some circuits.

Application: (Tutorial 4)
𝑉𝑜
• An op-amp with an open-loop gain of 1000 ( ) is used in the
𝑉𝑖
inverting configuration. If in this application the output voltage ranges
from -10V to +10V, what is the maximum voltage by which the
negative input node, Vn, of the op-amp departs from its ideal value?

Comparison: (Tutorial 5)
• An op-amp having open-loop gain of 5000 is used in a non-inverting
configuration with a feedback resistor of 1 M. For each of the
following values of input resistor, find the closed loop gain
a) if the amplifier was ideal
b) if the amplifier was non-ideal (e.g. A741)

Rg:

5 k
20 k
100 k

Comparison (2):
• Download and study the datasheets for the following op-amps:
• LM741
• LM324
• TL082
• Make a table to compare the following data:
• Open loop gain, input resistance, output resistance, input offset voltage, input
offset current, CMRR, unity gain bandwidth, slew rate.

Simulation verification:
• Employ a circuit simulator (Multisim) to verify the answers for Tutorial
2 ~ 3.
• You will need to edit the op-amp model properties to set the gain at
1000.
• The 3 terminal virtual op-amp device is recommended.
