Mapping of Vegetation Structure and

Diversity of Mangroves along the Coastal

Areas of Bacolod, Lanao del Norte Using
LiDAR

Jaime Q. Guihawan
Research Associate
MSU-IIT Parmap/Coastmap Team
Introduction
• Mangrove ecosystems provide numerous
ecosystem goods and services to local
communities (Polidoro et al., 2010).
• Coastal protection ranks as the most valuable
ecological services that mangrove ecosystems
provide (Barbier et al., 2010).
Objectives of the Study
• This study thus aims to test a workflow
adapted from UP Coastmap and modified by
the MSU-IIT Coastmap team in which
mangroves can be correctly extracted from
other coastal features
• Apply biodiversity assessment of mangroves
present in the area
Significance of the Study
• Serves as baseline data for coastal planning
and development and coastal hazard and
resource.
• Provides information on mangrove density,
diversity and extent to the LGU of Bacolod,
Lanao del Norte
Limitation of the study
• This study is limited only on the available
LiDAR datasets conducted by LiPAD flight
missions

Identification of Mangroves

• Transect method
- Three (3) 20mx20m
quadrat along the 100-
m transect
- Trees with DBH≥10cm
and tree height were
recorded
Results: Extracted Mangroves

• 1.12 sq. km of mangroves

Conclusion and Recommendation

• Mangroves can be extracted using SVM

• Potential mangrove regenerants can also be
extracted using OBIA
• Sonneratia alba and Rhizophora apiculata
mangrove species have high refoliation and
survival rates in the study areas
• Biodiversity assessment of mangroves is very
crucial in coastal resource management
