Session 2:

“CHRISTIAN LOVE”

Translated to Visayan by:

DOMINIANO D. ESTA

Talk by:

LUI L. SEMILLANO
GOAL :

 To communicate the CHRISTIAN

IDEAL for LOVE, and to
distinguish it from rival
conceptions of love.
A. The IMPORTANCE of Christian LOVE

 Matthew 22: 34-40

JESUS showed to us the
two commandments that
are inextricably bound
together.

“ LOVE OF GOD + LOVE OF

MAN (neighbor) = genuine
CORE of Christian life!”
A. The IMPORTANCE of Christian LOVE
 (1 Cor. 12:7) : Apostle Paul said, “The Spiritual GIFTS of Healing,
Wisdom, Prophecy, Discernment of Spirits, and other gifts are all
given to the body of Christ” . . . but will lack the fullness of God’s
power unless they are exercised with love.

 (1 Cor. 14:1) : “Earnestly desire the spiritual gifts,” but, “make love
your aim.”

 (1 Cor. 13:13) : “ Now we have faith, hope, and love . . . But the
greatest of these is love.”

 (John 13:35) : Jesus told his disciples that all men would be able to
identify his followers by their love.
B. MISCONCEPTIONS on the idea of
Love
#1.
That LOVE is a “feeling”, a
mere emotional response:
– Passion for a person
– Compassion for the world

Love, if it remains in the

emotional sense, is WEAK &
FALLIBLE!
B. MISCONCEPTIONS on the idea of
Love
#2.
The modern tendency
to blur distinctions
among different
relationships. Many
people today believe
love should be
expressed the same
way in all types of
relationships.
TYPES of LOVING JESUS’ Model
RELATIONSHIPS of Ideal Loving

1) Romanticized (infatuation)  JOHN 13:34

2) Magti-ayon (sexual) Jesus tells his disciples, “A new

commandment I give to you, that
3) Pamilya (familial) you love one another as I have
loved you.”
4) Managhigala (philial)
5) Igsoong Magtotoo (brotherly) How ?
6) AGAPE (self-less)  It meant how He LIVED with
them, FED them, and CARED for
them, TAUGHT THEM the truths
of the Kingdom, and finally
GAVE HIS LIFE for them . . .

(#Agape love)
C. The Society’s FALSE images / perception of LOVE

STEMS from the following:

 Experience of FAILED relationships

– Self with Others
– Self with GOD
– Relationships of other people

 MEDIA Influence (subliminal feed)

 print (paperback novels, magazines,
newspapers, books)
 broadcast (TV , radio, movies)
 plays (musicales, stage drama)
D. The Christian View of Love
 What is
oA decisive, personal
“Christian Love”?
COMMITMENT to
o An action
others
empowered by the
(#enduring, loving acceptance)
Holy Spirit
D. The Christian View of Love

What is Christian Self Love?

 The person meet his own physical,

emotional, and spiritual needs.
 The person ACCEPTS OWN FAULTS,
and corrects them.
 Receives adequate AFFECTION and
UNDERSTANDING, because his
expression of how he loves himself is
how he treats others (C.S. Lewis)
E. The OBSTACLES of Loving
a. “Negative feelings” c. “Capricious” love

b. “Feeling” love d. Loving “many” people

F. Recap on the true
meaning of
CHRISTIAN LOVE
 (Mt. 22:39 / Jn. 13:34)
“You shall love your neighbor as
yourself.”

 (1 Jn. 3:18)
“My dear children, let us love not
only with words and with our lips,
but in TRUTH and in DEED.”
C. The HOLY SPIRIT in Loving
– CHRISTIAN LOVE is the
“fruit of a decision”.
It demands the POWER
of GOD.

– CHRISTIAN LOVE NEEDS

THE HOLY SPIRIT TO
DWELL IN US SO THAT
WE CAN LOVE FULLY AS
GOD WOULD WANT US
TO LOVE!

G. REFLECTION

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not

envy, love does not boast, love is not
proud. 5 Love does not dishonor others, love is
not self-seeking, love is not easily
angered, love keeps no record of
wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but
rejoices with the truth. 7 Love always protects,
always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
H. Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.

And kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
And you will renew the face of the earth.

Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit

You have taught the hearts of your faithful.
Grant, that in the same Spirit we may be truly wise
And ever rejoice in your consolation.
This we ask through Christ our Lord.
