INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEM ON

AIRCRAFT CARRIER
(VIKRANT AND VIKRAMADITYA)
IS AIRCRAFT CARRIER HAVING ILS?
• Yes its have.
• It's actually called an ICLS and there's also a system called
ACLS.
• The ICLS gives a "bullseye" which looks like regular ILS needles,
while the ACLS gives a small tadpole-thing we call the
"needles".
• The ICLS gives the same info as a civilian ILS, ie, where you are
in relation to the glideslope/localizer.
• The ACLS tells you where to steer to so you hit the touchdown
zone precisely.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ICLS AND ACLS
 The ICLS system is
like a typical ILS
system in that it
sends the signal
‘out’ and anybody
in that area with the
right equipment can
receive the signal
and get the needles
on their display for
line up and glide
path.
ACLS
• The ACLS on the other
hand will lock up the
aircraft with a special
approach radar. The
aircraft will then get
needles based on the
radar tracking of your
position. It is better
integrated with the ship
and the ship’s movement.
Most aircraft can couple
their aircraft to this system
and depending on ship
movement can be flown
all the way to touchdown.
NOT ONLY ICLS AND ACLS

• SOME OTHER COMMUNICATION WAYS

ARE THERE
• There are these amazingly
important people called LSOs
or Landing Signal Officers.
They help the jet to land by
communicating with the pilot
through a mix of radio and
light signals. If the LSO thinks
that the jet isn’t properly lined
up, then he asks the pilot to
‘go around’, that is, take
another attempt.
• Now, there isn’t only an
LSO who is responsible
for the landing. A
machine or lens called
the Fresnel Lens Optical
Landing System is used.
It is sort of like the array
of lights a commercial
pilot would see while
landing. The height of
the red and green lights
tell the pilot of the angle
they are approaching
at.
LATEST TECHNOLOGY
The aircraft carrier is equipped with LUNA and DAPS
landing systems for MiG and Sea Harriers jet fighters.
LUNA is the optical landing system.
It provides the pilot with continuous visual data on the
carrier aircraft position on the glideslope at the final
approach.
 Deck Approach Projector Sight (DAPS). This system may
be used by pilots flying with NVDs, who are making their
final approach to an aircraft carrier.
The ship is also fitted with an automated Resistor-E radar
complex and various subsystems to provide air traffic
control and approach / landing for carrier-based aircraft.
 The radar system provides short-range navigation and
flight data for the aircraft.
 The precision approach guidance system of the Resistor-
E complex provides flying craft guidance during a
precision approach.
 This complex along with its various sub-systems provides
navigation and flight data to ship borne aircraft
operating at extended ranges from the mother ship.
