Principio de funcionamiento
La luz se obtiene por la emisión
generada en el choque de los
electrones libres con los átomos del gas
del tubo de descarga. Los choques
excitan a los electrones que pasan a
órbitas de más energía. Cuando
regresan a su órbita se produce la
emisión de los fotones, es decir la
radiación de luz

Lamparas en descarga
Las lámparas de descarga constituyen
una forma alternativa de producir luz de
una manera más eficiente y económica
que las lámparas incandescentes. Por
eso, su uso está tan extendido hoy en
día. La luz emitida se consigue por
excitación de un gas sometido a
descargas eléctricas entre dos
electrodos. Según el gas contenido en la
lámpara y la presión a la que esté
sometido tendremos diferentes tipos de
lámparas, cada una de ellas con sus
propias características luminosas

Funcionamiento
En las lámparas de descarga, la luz se consigue estableciendo una corriente eléctrica entre
dos electrodos situados en un tubo lleno con un gas o vapor ionizado.
En el interior del tubo, se producen descargas eléctricas como consecuencia de la
diferencia de potencial entre los electrodos. Estas descargas provocan un flujo de
electrones que atraviesa el gas. Cuando uno de ellos choca con los electrones de las capas
externas de los átomos les transmite energía y pueden suceder dos cosas

La primera posibilidad es que la energía transmitida
en el choque sea lo suficientemente elevada para
poder arrancar al electrón de su orbital. Este, puede
a su vez, chocar con los electrones de otros átomos
repitiendo el proceso. Si este proceso no se limita,
se puede provocar la destrucción de la lámpara por
un exceso de corriente.

La otra posibilidad es que el electrón no reciba
suficiente energía para ser arrancado. En este
caso, el electrón pasa a ocupar otro orbital de
mayor energía. Este nuevo estado
acostumbra a ser inestable y rápidamente se
vuelve a la situación inicial. Al hacerlo, el
electrón libera la energía extra en forma de
radiación electromagnética, principalmente
ultravioleta (UV) o visible

Que produce
la luz
La luz es una radiación
electromagnética (del mismo tipo que
las que a veces nos hacen mucho
daño). El espectro electromagnético
incluye desde los rayos gamma hasta
las ondas de radio.
“ El espectro visibles constituye una pequeña parte del espectro
y estos son sus colores:

• La luz visible está formada por vibraciones electromagnéticas con longitudes de onda
que van aproximadamente de 350 a 750 nanómetros (1 nm=1 milmillonésimas de metro).
Lo que conocemos como luz blanca es la suma de todas las ondas comprendidas entre
esas longitudes de onda, cuando sus intensidades son semejantes.
• La luz se forma por saltos de los electrones en los orbitales de los átomos. Como sabes,
los electrones poseen la extraña cualidad de moverse en determinados orbitales sin
consumir energía, pero cuando caen a un orbital inferior de menor energía (más próximo
al núcleo) emiten energía en forma de radiación. Algunos de esos saltos producen
radiación visible que llamamos luz, radiación que ven nuestros ojos en su manifestación
de color
