SARANYA MUKHERJEE
29TH OCTOBER 2018
WHAT IS NUTRITION?

 Nutrition may be defined as the science of food

and its relation to health
 Nutrients play a role in body growth
development and maintenance
NUTRITION SHALL BE DEALT UNDER…

 The subject of nutrition is extensive but we shall

deal it under
1. Dietary constituents
2. Nutritional requirements
3. Assessment of nutritional status
4. Nutritional problems in public health
5. Nutritional program in India
PROTEINS

 The word protein literally means ‘that which is of

first importance’
 Protiens fall under macro nutrients and are
often called proximate principles
CHEMISTRY OF PROTEINS

 Proteins are complex organic nitrogenous

compounds
 Composed of C,H,O,N and S
 Proteins constitute 20% of BW
SOURCES OF PROTEINS

 Animal sources
 Plant sources
FUNCTIONS OF PROTEINS

 Body building
 Repair and maintenance of body tissues
 Maintenance of oncotic pressure
 Synthesis of substances like: antibodies, plasma
proteins,heamoglobin,enzymes,hormones and
coagulation factors
SUPPLEMENTARY ACTION OF PROTEINS

 Ever wondered why we eat rice with dal?

DIETARY NEEDS VARY IN…

 A renal failure patient

 A post operative patient
 Children in their growing age
EVALUATION OF PROTEIN QUALITY

 Besides having the knowledge of the amino acid

content of the proteins it is equally important to
know their digestibility and suitability to the body
 Which can be determined by:
1. Protein efficiency ratio
2. Biological value
3. Net protein utilisation
PROTEIN REQUIREMENTS

 The Indian Counsil of Medical Research in 1989

recommended 1.0 gram protein per kg of body
weight for an Indian adult
 This value differs for varios population groups
HOW TO ASSESS PROTEIN NUTRITION
STATUS?

 With all this knoqledge about proteins we shall try to see how
community health can be promoted with its help
 A battery of tests can be done ti assess the protein nutrition
sataus:
1. Arm muscle circumference
2. Creatinine-height index
3. Serum albumin
4. Serum tranferrin
5. Total body nitrogen
PROGRAMS BY THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT
TO COMBAT MALNUTRITION

 Integratet child development service

program(ICDS)
 Speceal nutrition program(SNP)
